Conduct inpatient rounds including assessment of newly admitted and follow-up of active inpatients. Obtain health histories and perform comprehensive and focused physical assessments. Formulate differential diagnoses and determine need for further investigation with the most responsible physician. Complete and document pre-operative and post-operative assessments in a timely manner. Facilitate timely assessment and admission of Gastroenterology patients from the Emergency Department and direct outpatient clinic pathways. Support discharge planning including coordination of follow-up care, medication reconciliation, and patient education. Complete admission notes, progress notes, and discharge summaries as required. Order and complete preliminary interpretation of diagnostic tests (hematology, microbiology, chemistry, serology, urinalysis, blood gas, ECG, plain film x-ray). Provide outpatient clinic support including follow-up visits for stable but complex patients. Support urgent add-on appointments and same-day assessments as required. Provide patient and family education regarding diagnosis, treatment plans, and follow-up expectations. Communicate relevant information and explanations to the supervising physician and seek direction where appropriate. Participate in implementation, monitoring, and reporting of Quality Control and Quality Improvement programs. Complete urgent and non-urgent CD disk requests according to departmental policy and procedure. Schedule and reschedule inpatient exams for external referral sources. Participate in orientation of new staff. Participate in departmental meetings. Develop and maintain good working relationships with staff, physicians, volunteers, and patients.
