The Clinical Perfusionist operates and maintains the heart lung machine and related cardiovascular support equipment. They are also responsible for performing blood analysis, managing equipment stock, and conducting perfusion-related research.
Candidates must hold a Cardiovascular Perfusion advanced certificate or diploma and be a member of the Canadian Society of Clinical Perfusion. A Basic Life Support (BLS) certificate and registration with the appropriate licensing body are also required.

The Clinical Perfusionist sets up, operates and maintains the heart lung machine and related equipment such as the intra-aortic balloon pump, autotransfusion devices, ecmo and vads . The incumbent is responsible for routinely checking all hardware and maintains perfusion related equipment and disposables stock on an ongoing basis, carries out blood gas, heparin concentration, activated clotting time and thrombelastograph analysis as well as quality control and calibration of those analyzers. The incumbent also acquaints other health care professionals with the perfusionists handling and use of equipment. They initiate, participate in and complete research projects in perfusion related areas.
