Performs routine laboratory procedures to obtain data for the diagnosis and treatment of diseases. Responsibilities include specimen accessioning, operating laboratory equipment, and maintaining accurate documentation.
Requires graduation from a Laboratory Technician program or equivalent experience, with a preference for microbiology experience. Candidates must pass several security checks, including Criminal Record and Abuse Registry checks.

Performs a variety of routine laboratory procedures to obtain data for use in the diagnosis and treatment of disease. KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES: Retrieve specimens from Specimen Processing and prepare them for accessioning; Opens, separates, numbers and arranges Microbiology specimens for laboratory examination & processing; Sets up and operates laboratory equipment in preparation for processing specimens & for preparing & staining slides; Performs routine maintenance of laboratory equipment (daily/weekly/monthly) & documents the completion of each task on the appropriate form(s); Maintains confidential and accuracy of appropriate documents; Other duties as required/assigned; SKILLED KNOWLEDGE REQUIREMENTS: Knowledge Graduate of a Laboratory Technician program or equivalent previous experience. Medical terminology an asset. Experience working in Microbiology preferred. Technical Skills Previous experience with accessioning & processing Microbiology specimens is an asset; Experience operating and maintaining laboratory equipment; Knowledge of Microbiology is an asset; Social Processing Skills Ability to function in a fast-paced environment & take instruction from senior staff/ supervisor/ manager; Ability to multitask and work efficiently in a team environment is essential; Attention to detail is essential; Organizational skills are essential; Excellent communication skills; Experience in word processing preferred; Ability to work independently and within a group environment & be reliable/accountable for duties assigned; ***Please refer to Article 2 and 7 of the Collective Agreement regarding temporary positions, job postings, promotions and transfers***
This position requires a current satisfactory Criminal Records Check (including Vulnerable Sector Search), Child Abuse Registry Check and Adult Abuse Registry Check as conditions of employment. The successful candidate will be responsible for any service charges incurred. A security check is considered current if it was obtained no more than six (6) months prior to the start of employment.
