The role involves processing, staining, and interpreting histology and cytology specimens, including grossing surgical tissues and performing frozen sections. The technologist is responsible for ensuring quality preparation of slides and maintaining laboratory equipment in compliance with CMLTO guidelines.
Candidates must be a CSMLS certified Medical Laboratory Technologist registered with the CMLTO in Cytology/Histology. A minimum of 2 years of recent experience in a hospital histology setting is required.
Accountabilities: Accessions specimens; investigates non-conformances on irretrievable specimens prior to processing and according to Laboratory protocols Apply acceptance/rejection criteria to retrievable and irretrievable specimens Recognizes inhibitors to quality preparation (e.g. bloody, mucoid, scant etc.) and take necessary steps as per protocol to ensure artifact-free slides Select appropriate preparatory method including ancillary studies (e.g. cell block) Processes specimens; stains and cover slips slides for screening Screens, dots and interprets slides; enters diagnosis for pathologist acceptance/modification and final verification Reviews patient history; correlates Cytology results with clinical findings and other Laboratory results Responds to pathologists’ requests for ancillary studies or add-on tests Ensures compliance with CMLTO Practice Guidelines for MLTs Practicing in Cytology Grossing of specimens which includes examining, describing, dissecting, and measuring of small and small/big gross surgical specimens of varying tissue types Embeds processed tissue; checks embedding log and investigates errors / discrepancies Cuts paraffin wax tissue blocks using microtome; makes, labels, stains and cover slips slides as appropriate Operation and maintenance of IHC stainers and other equipment Frozen sections Correlates cut slides to tissue blocks Cuts deeper levels as required Files and archives slides and blocks Assist with MLA duties as required
Medical Laboratory Technologist with CSMLS certification Must be registered with the College of Medical Laboratory Technologists of Ontario (CMLTO) – Cytology/Histology Minimum 2 years recent experience in general Histology in a hospital setting Minimum 2 years’ experience as a laboratory technologist, or must have successfully completed education and training relevant to the position of an MLT in Cytology Ability to distinguish colors Comfortable dealing with surgical and autopsy specimens and the deceased Strong medical terminology is required Strong multi-tasking, critical thinking and problem-solving skills Excellent organizational and communication skills; strong interpersonal skills Proven ability to be a team player; able to work independently with minimal supervision Knowledge of LabLion, Meditech, Paradigm and other Microsoft Office computer system would be an asset Excellent attendance, punctuality and work ethic Required to travel between and work at all hospital sites
