  • One year of recent related experience in a HIMS department of an acute care health care facility or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Ability to teach clients and others (one-on-one and in groups).
  • Broad knowledge of AIS and Injury Severity Scoring.
  • Broad knowledge of CIHI coding and abstracting systems including ICD and CCI currently utilized in BC.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of pathophysiology terminology and disease processes.
  • Demonstrated effective communication with clients, families, the public, medical staff, and interdisciplinary team; ability to resolve conflict.
  • Demonstrated critical thinking to integrate and evaluate data from multiple sources and make decisions using a systems approach.
  • Demonstrated ability to organize work, set objectives, establish priorities, manage time and resources, and collaborate across disciplines.

Job description

Position Summary

  • Join our team at Northern Health as a Health Information Management Practitioner, where your analytical skills and attention to detail will help transform health data into meaningful insights that support quality care across our communities. In accordance with the established mission, vision, values, and strategic priorities of Northern Health, and under the general supervision of Executive Lead or designate, the Health Information Management Practitioner performs technical functions such as interpreting and abstracting data, scoring data by injury, entering data into computer, compiling statistical data, performing statistical analysis, generating a variety of reports as directed, communicating with internal and external personnel regarding data retrieval and interpretation, processing approved release of data requests, providing input into the review and revision of policies and procedures, and participating on various committees and in designated projects as assigned. Qualfications
  • Graduation from a recognized program for Health Information Practitioners. Certified by the Canadian College of Health Information Management as a certificant, and eligible for active membership with the Canadian Health Information Management Association.

  • Teaching: Ability to teach clients and others both one-on-one and in groups.
  • Knowledge Integration: Integrates best practice and current research evidence to support professional practice decisions and actions. Broad knowledge of the Abbreviated Injury Scale (AIS) and Injury Severity Scoring. Broad knowledge of Canadian Institute of Health Information’s coding and abstracting systems in including International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems (ICD) and the Canadian Classification of Health Interventions (CCI) currently utilized in BC. Comprehensive knowledge of pathophysiology terminology and disease processes.
  • Communication: Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with clients, families, the public, medical staff and the members of the interdisciplinary team using, oral written and computer communication means. Demonstrated ability to effectively resolve conflict.
