Requirements summary

  • Bachelor’s degree in pharmacy.
  • Current registration as a Licensed Pharmacist with the College of Pharmacists of British Columbia.
  • Completion of a Hospital Pharmacy Residency Program; or 1 year of recent and related experience; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

    Job description

    • Clinical Pharmacist BC Cancer Surrey, BC You are a Clinical Pharmacist who thrives in a teamwork environment that offers a balance of patient interaction, collaborative care planning, and preparing medications and other pharmaceuticals. You have an interest in a continuous learning environment and developing knowledge in specialized oncology practice including drug therapy and use of alternative complementary treatments. Working with BC Cancer, a global leader in clinical care and research, will offer you meaningful work and a forward-thinking team of colleagues. Connor McIntyre works with BC Cancer as a Clinical Pharmacist, and his role includes both in-pharmacy duties as well as direct patient care, including counselling newly diagnosed patients on their medications, and supporting nurses in the chemotherapy suite giving IV therapy. Watch this video to learn more about working at BC Cancer What you’ll do Clinical Pharmacists are key members of the multidisciplinary team at BC Cancer, and work with the support of BC Cancer’s provincial network of pharmacists. Responsibilities include providing individualization of drug therapy utilizing patient information to develop therapeutic plans, providing in-service education to other health care professionals within the Agency, providing drug information to patients, physicians, nurses and other health care professionals both internal and external to the Agency. Usual duties include:
    • Provide individualization of drug therapy to patients through methods such as receiving patient charts, assessing clinical response through patient contact and collaboration with other health care providers and creating an individualized therapeutic plan.
    • Interact with patients and the health care team to ensure appropriate medication therapy and to develop therapeutic plans through methods such as developing discharge plans for inpatients and medication calendars for outpatients, assisting, as part of the care team, with the formulation of a therapeutic plan for the use of supportive care medications and assessing patient comprehension of that plan, answering patient’s questions and assisting with formulation of a therapeutic plan for the use of alternative and complementary treatments, and monitoring of patient compliance with therapeutic plans.
    • Prepare and dispense medications and other pharmaceutical supplies to ensure appropriate medication therapy and to ensure practices and standards are in accordance with relevant federal and provincial legislation.
    • Provide verbal and written drug information to physicians, nurses and other health care professionals, to the lay public, pharmacists and external health care professionals, and to patients through individualized counselling.
    • Assist, as part of the care team, with the provision and/or financial support of non-BC Cancer benefit medications required to optimize the therapeutic plan through methods such as providing information and interacting with patients, health care providers and representatives from outside agencies regarding options such as compassionate release programs or obtaining financial support through emergency aid.
    • Provide instruction and/or supervision of pharmacy students and/or pharmacy residents through methods such as mentoring. What you bring

    Qualifications

    • Bachelor’s degree in pharmacy with current registration as a Licensed Pharmacist with the College of Pharmacists of British Columbia.
    • Completion of a Hospital Pharmacy Residency Program; 1 year of recent and related experience, OR an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
    • Demonstrate comprehensive knowledge of the historic and ongoing impacts of settler colonialism and systemic racism on Indigenous Peoples within social and health contexts. This includes understanding how these factors contribute to current health disparities and barriers to care. Show a clear commitment to identifying, challenging, and eradicating Indigenous-specific racism and all forms of discrimination impacting equity-deserving groups within healthcare settings. This involves recognizing personal biases, institutional barriers, engaging in anti-racism education and training and advocating for systemic change.
    • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of legislative obligations and provincial commitments within BC Cancer contexts found in the foundational documents including Truth & Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action (2015), In Plain Sight (2020), BC's Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act (2019), United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP), Reclaiming Power and Place Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women & Girls Calls for Justice (2019), the Declaration Act Action Plan and Remembering Keegan: A First Nations Case Study, BC Human Rights Code, Anti-racism Data Act and how they intersect across the health care system.     • Brings an understanding of the Indigenous specific racism and the broader systemic racism that exists in the colonial health care structure, and has demonstrated leadership in breaking down barriers and ensuring an environment of belonging. Foster trust through respectful communication, active listening, and honoring equity-deserving people's perspectives on health and wellness. Participate in workshops, cultural immersion experiences, and continuous professional development to stay informed and responsive to equity-deserving groups. Provide patient-centred care that respects Indigenous ways of knowing and healing, respects BIPOC experiences and world views ensuring that care plans are culturally relevant and holistic.
