About the role

The FASD Youth Mentor assesses client needs to develop life and social skills while providing emotional and practical support to foster independence. They collaborate with youth and support networks to identify goals and connect clients with community resources for a successful transition into adulthood.

Catholic Social Services is currently seeking a full-time, 40 hours per week, Community Outreach Worker/FASD Youth Mentor in EDMONTON to join our McDaniel Youth Program team.

This position is a full-time Position has a weekly schedule of: Between Monday to Friday daytime hours, 8:00am-4:30pm with some Evening work on Tuesdays until 7pm.

Program Overview McDaniel Youth Program: Provides mentorship supports to youth aged 14 to 21 years who are diagnosed with, or possible, FASD (Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder) to help them access community supports and make a successful transition into adulthood.

Mentors work with youth for a period of up to 3 years.

This is a community based program that requires travel to various locations to meet and transport youth.

Job Summary: As a FASD Youth Mentor, you will be working with youth and be responsible for assessing the needs of clients to address challenges, access resources, develop life and social skills and ensure the clients have an ongoing network of support while providing emotional and practical support to foster independence.

Working in collaboration with the youth and their other supports, the FASD Youth Mentor will assist in identifying goals and the strategies in connecting youth with life-long community resources that can continue to assist them once they have transitioned from the Service.

Other responsibilities include but are not limited to: Assessing the needs of clients, determining suitability of services, and identifying objective goals and developmental plans with the client Helping clients in gaining an understanding of issues and establish access to other community resources Building social and other support networks to assist in clients’ transition to be independent, autonomous, and self-determined as appropriate to their abilities and experience Facilitating practical changes and/or initiate activities to enhance in the clients’ physical and social environments to promote their well-being and self-esteem Providing consistent teaching and support around specific life and social skills.

Supporting clients with problem-solving, communication, and conflict resolution through modeling and coaching Assisting clients with different aspects of daily living, including but not limited to arranging appointments, transportation, and financial support as needed.

Submitting required program documentation within established time frames Attending all team meetings, case consultations, and service reviews Other duties as required What This Job Requires:: A Diploma/Degree in Human Services (or equivalent).

A minimum of two (2) years’ experience counselling youth and young adults with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD). (equivalencies may be considered) Experience with youth and family programming and case management is a requirement of this position.

The ability to work independently in the community The ideal candidate will have an organized and compassionate approach to the work, strong team work skills, a commitment to developing positive supporting relationship Other qualifications include: Demonstrated experience and knowledge of the Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) is required Certification or training in Indigenous Awareness, Abuse Awareness, Standard First Aid, and Violence/Crisis Intervention is a definite asset.

Demonstrated assessment, problem solving, and critical thinking skills Knowledge of community resources is required Intermediate competency with Microsoft Office and other Agency computer applications Demonstrated ability to act with professionalism, confidentiality, and diplomacy Proven case documentation and effective information reporting practices A reliable Vehicle, Valid Driver’s License, Vehicle Registration and Third Party Liability Insurance (amount of two million) Police Information Check including vulnerable sector search, and Intervention Record Check current within six (6) months Summary of driving record with no more than six (6) demerit points current within one (1) year.

Requirements
