Overview
Monitor compliance with municipal by-laws and provincial statutes; identify, investigate, and report alleged offences and enforce laws as appropriate. Conduct investigations using standard operating procedures to gather and analyze evidence. Patrol assigned areas in an animal control vehicle to locate stray, sick, injured, or deceased animals and provide required services. Transport animals to shelter for impounding, disposal, quarantine, or rabies investigation; transport to veterinarian or adoption kiosks as required. Monitor compliance with local animal control by-laws and take proactive and reactive remediation actions. Investigate violations of animal control and noise by-laws and other related legislation, regulations, policies, and procedures. Inspect animal-related businesses under the Business Licensing By-law. Issue and serve notices of violation, orders, and other documents under the Provincial Offences Act and related processes. Recommend legal action and prepare court briefs for supervisor review. Attend court and quasi-judicial bodies to present testimony and evidence. Handle sick, injured, dangerous, or deceased animals safely and humanely; determine when euthanasia is necessary and assist with tranquilization/euthanasia as required. Utilize department-issued equipment as directed. Create and maintain investigation files and update departmental databases (e.g., Chameleon, Amanda, Officer Android). Maintain records in data management systems and Officer Notebooks with required confidentiality; comply with MFIPPA. Clean and disinfect fleet vehicles and equipment; ensure maintenance/service records are current. Represent the department at meetings and liaise with officials to recommend by-law amendments. Interact with the public and other agencies; respond to inquiries and provide animal-related information (licensing, vaccinations, rabies control, spaying/neutering, adoptions). Promote and enforce pet licensing, including issuance in the field. Perform animal care duties as assigned and assist with front office duties at the shelter. Assist with departmental tasks, special projects, blitzes, joint initiatives, and events. Participate in training new employees.
