About the role

Oversee day-to-day operation of the Anesthesia Assistant team in alignment with organizational and Canadian Anesthesia Society standards.

Create written protocols for standards of practice and quality assurance related to equipment use.

Support inter-professional collaboration and model effective change management strategies.

Participate in relief arrangements to accommodate approved leave requests/sick calls and coordinate daily work activities.

Coordinate clinical instruction, education, training, and supervision of Anesthesia Assistant students.

Identify curriculum-aligned lecture topics, develop presentations, provide materials, and arrange guest lectures.

Ensure appropriate student supervision and maintenance of clinical standards of the training program.

Instruct students in technical procedures by demonstrating Anesthesia Assistant techniques in operating rooms and/or simulation laboratory.

Collaborate with educational institutions to ensure quality educational outcomes aligned with program requirements and BCWH/BCCH policies, standards, and guidelines

Anesthesia Assistant Supervisor BC Women’s Hospital & Health Centre Vancouver, BC What you’ll do

Oversees the day to day operation of the Anesthesia Assistant team in alignment with organizational and CAS (Canadian Anesthesia Society) standards by creating written protocols related to standards of practice and quality assurance with respect to equipment use to ensure adequate patient care.

Supports and cultivates strong inter-professional collaboration through the development of processes and mechanisms that support positive patient outcomes. Utilizes and models effective change management strategies to achieve goals.

Schedules Anaesthesia Assistant staff, ensuring appropriate coverage including the call schedule.

Conducts evaluations and long term planning; provides information for budget preparation; attends and contributes to patient assessment and selection rounds; recommends capital equipment for purchase to the Surgical Services Program Manager.

Participates in appropriate relief arrangements in order to accommodate approved leave requests/sick calls as determined by department needs; coordinates daily work activities for the AA's and the department.

Coordinates all aspects of the delivery of effective clinical instruction, education, training and supervision of Anesthesia Assistant students. Coordinates and presents lectures by identifying topics in accordance with curriculum guidelines, developing presentations, providing material and arranging for guest lectures. Ensures appropriate student supervision and that clinical standards of the training program are maintained. Instructs students in technical procedures by demonstrating Anesthesia Assistant techniques in operating rooms and /or simulation laboratory

Collaborates with educational institutions to ensure the quality of educational outcomes for students adhere to the requirements of the Anaesthesia Education program and with the established policies, standards and guidelines of BCWH/BCCH What you bring

Qualifications

  • Graduate from a recognized school of Respiratory Therapy, plus three (3) years recent related experience in the specialty practice environment, including one (1) year in a supervisory capacity, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
  • Completion of an accredited post-graduate diploma in Anesthesia Assistant Technology.
  • Eligible for membership in the Canadian Society of Respiratory Therapists (CSRT), and the British Columbia Society of Respiratory Therapists (BCSRT).
  • Current Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS)
  • Current Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS)
  • Demonstrate comprehensive knowledge of the historic and ongoing impacts of settler colonialism and systemic racism on Indigenous Peoples within social and health contexts. This includes understanding how these factors contribute to current health disparities and barriers to care. Show a clear commitment to identifying, challenging, and eradicating Indigenous-specific racism and all forms of discrimination impacting equity-deserving groups within healthcare settings. This involves recognizing personal biases, institutional barriers, engaging in anti-racism education and training and advocating for systemic change.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of legislative obligations and provincial commitments within CW contexts found in the foundational documents including Truth & Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action (2015), In Plain Sight (2020), BC's Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act (2019), United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP), Reclaiming Power and Place Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women & Girls Calls for Justice (2019), the Declaration Act Action Plan and Remembering Keegan: A First Nations Case Study, BC Human Rights Code, Anti-racism Data Act and how they intersect across the health care system. Requirements
