About the role

Provide medical and public health leadership for the Immunization Programs and Vaccine Preventable Diseases (IPVPDS) within the Communicable Disease Prevention and Response Unit (CDPRU).

Support detection, prevention, and response to vaccine preventable diseases and adverse events following immunizations.

Represent BCCDC in regional, provincial, national, and federal-provincial initiatives related to public health surveillance, planning, policy development, and population health practice.

Support the Medical Director with medical leadership for the CDPRU, including administrative and strategic responsibilities.

Embed reconciliation and partnership with First Nations, Inuit, and Métis Peoples as a core principle of work

Public Health Physician & Associate Medical Director, Immunization Programs and Vaccine Preventable Diseases (IPVPDS) Communicable Disease Prevention and Response Unit (CDPRU), BC Centre for Disease Control (BCCDC) Regular, Full-Time (1.0 FTE) The BC Centre for Disease Control (BCCDC) provides provincial and national leadership in public health through surveillance, detection, prevention and consultation and provides both direct diagnostic and treatment services to people with diseases of public health importance.

BCCDC, in collaboration with public health partners, has a responsibility to identify and respond to dynamic provincial population and public health priorities in BC, which may shift over time.

BCCDC is committed to advancing Truth and Reconciliation, upholding the principles of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP), and eliminating Indigenous-specific racism.

The focus of the IPVPDS is to provide provincial surveillance and expert clinical consultation services for communicable disease issues (particularly vaccine preventable diseases and invasive Group A Streptococcus infections, and adverse events following immunizations), provide and coordinate research and evaluation, strengthen provincial public health networks and policy, and assist with training, education, and coordination of provincial programs.

The BCCDC is currently seeking to hire a Public Health Physician & Associate Medical Director, IPVPDS.

This is a medical leadership role within the CDPRU that supports detection, prevention and response to vaccine preventable diseases, BC’s immunization programs, and an evidence-based approach to provincial vaccine policies and services within the broader CDPRU.

The role is a permanent Public Health Physician position with a five-year, renewable term appointment as the Associate Medical Director.

Reporting to the Medical Director of the CDPRU, the Associate Medical Director of the IPVPDS provides medical and public health leadership, working closely with IPVDS scientific and operational leaders to advance strategic priorities, program delivery, policy development, clinical administration, and quality improvement.

The role collaborates with Regional Health Authorities, the First Nations Health Authority, Métis Nation British Columbia, the Office of the Provincial Health Officer, the Ministry of Health, academic institutions, non-governmental organizations, and provincial, federal, and international partners to address emerging and ongoing public health issues.

The Associate Medical Director supports the development, implementation, evaluation, and dissemination of provincial public health policies, guidelines, and standards, helping to strengthen evidence-informed practice across British Columbia.

Working with a wide range of internal and external partners, the role provides expert medical advice through evidence reviews, briefing notes, policy and program recommendations, presentations, and consultation on complex public health issues.

Key responsibilities include providing clinical leadership and mentorship to IPVPDS staff; supporting strategic planning, priority setting, and operational decision-making; contributing to surveillance, outbreak response, applied research, quality improvement, and knowledge translation activities; and ensuring alignment with the Provincial Health Officer's mandate and Ministry of Health priorities.

The Associate Medical Director also represents BCCDC in regional, provincial, national, and federal-provincial initiatives related to public health surveillance, planning, policy development, and population health practice.

The Public Health Physician & Associate Medical Director supports the Medical Director with medical leadership for the CDPRU, which may include administrative and strategic responsibilities.

They are also part of the senior leadership team at the BCCDC and a key contributor to charting the direction of the BCCDC while supporting the leadership in creating a collaborative and creative environment.

Qualifications

Applicants must be eligible for licensure as a specialist in British Columbia and hold RCPSC certification or equivalent qualifications in a specialty such as public health and preventive medicine, community medicine, infectious diseases or a related specialty. Along with at least 5 years of relevant public health experience, the successful candidate will be an experienced public health physician and medical leader with sound medical judgement and expertise in communicable disease prevention and control, population health, and evidence-informed public health practice. They will have a demonstrated ability to provide strategic leadership, foster partnerships across government, health authorities, Indigenous organizations, academia, and other stakeholders, and translate evidence into policy, programs, and practice. The candidate will possess advanced skills in public health surveillance, outbreak management, research, quality improvement, and knowledge translation, along with experience preparing executive briefings, policy recommendations, and other decision-support materials. A comprehensive knowledge of the regulatory agencies, legislation, policies, and processes that govern public health in British Columbia is an asset. Excellent communication, collaboration, mentorship, and relationship-building skills are essential, together with experience in resource planning, quality assurance, and advancing equity, quality, and excellence in public health service delivery. The successful candidate will embed reconciliation and partnership with First Nations, Inuit, and Métis Peoples as a core principle of their work and will contribute to a culturally safe, inclusive, and collaborative environment. Requirements
