About the role

Transcribe physician orders for laboratory tests, medications, diagnostic tests, treatments, and surgical pre and post-operative procedures.

Set up, maintain, and complete patient charts and records (including weight, temperature, pulse, respiration, and lab results) and attach reviewed reports.

Accept calls from PBCU staff regarding illness and absence from work; communicate information to unit(s) and appropriate personnel.

Call in relief staff according to predetermined guidelines; refer problems/difficulties to the supervisor.

Maintain relief staff contact list information and related records.

Maintain timekeeping records for PBCU staff and submit to Payroll as required.

Perform receptionist duties: receive patients/visitors/others and answer queries or direct to appropriate area/staff.

Perform clerical duties including typing, answering the telephone, requisitioning supplies, and maintaining time sheets and census information.

Perform other related duties as assigned

Transcribe to appropriate forms and processes physician orders for laboratory tests, medications, diagnostic tests, treatments, and surgical pre and post operative procedures.

Set up, maintain and complete patient charts, records information such as weight, temperature, pulse, respiration and lab test results in charts or other records as directed; attach documents such as laboratory and special examination reports to charts after review by authorized staff.

Accept calls from PBCU staff regarding illness and absence from work and communicates information received to the unit(s) and appropriate personnel; call in relief staff according to pre-determined guidelines and refer problems/difficulties to the supervisor; maintain relief staff contact list information and other related records; maintain timekeeping records for PBCU staff and submits to Payroll as required.

Qualifications

  • Grade 12, medical terminology and graduation from a recognized Nursing Unit Clerk program plus one year's recent related experience or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
  • Demonstrate comprehensive knowledge of the historic and ongoing impacts of settler colonialism and systemic racism on Indigenous Peoples within social and health contexts. This includes understanding how these factors contribute to current health disparities and barriers to care. Show a clear commitment to identifying, challenging, and eradicating Indigenous-specific racism and all forms of discrimination impacting equity-deserving groups within healthcare settings. This involves recognizing personal biases, institutional barriers, engaging in anti-racism education and training and advocating for systemic change.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of legislative obligations and provincial commitments within BCCH contexts found in the foundational documents including Truth & Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action (2015), In Plain Sight (2020), BC's Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act (2019), United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP), Reclaiming Power and Place Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women & Girls Calls for Justice (2019), the Declaration Act Action Plan and Remembering Keegan: A First Nations Case Study, BC Human Rights Code, Anti-racism Data Act and how they intersect across the health care system. Core Competencies
  • Brings an understanding of the Indigenous specific racism and the broader systemic racism that exists in the colonial health care structure, and has demonstrated initiatives in breaking down barriers and ensuring a safe environment ensuring a sense of belonging to all and informed by Indigenous Cultural Safety.
  • Awareness of social, economic, political and historical realities of settler colonialism on Indigenous Peoples and familiarity with addressing Indigenous-specific anti-racism, anti-racism and Indigenous Cultural Safety and foundational documents and legislative commitments (the Declaration Act, the Declaration Action Plan, TRC, IPS, Remembering Keegan, etc.).   • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.

Requirements

Grade 12 and medical terminology.

Graduation from a recognized Nursing Unit Clerk program.

One year’s recent related experience or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

Comprehensive knowledge of the historic and ongoing impacts of settler colonialism and systemic racism on Indigenous Peoples within social and health contexts.

Commitment to identifying, challenging, and eradicating Indigenous-specific racism and discrimination impacting equity-deserving groups in healthcare settings.

Demonstrated knowledge of legislative obligations and provincial commitments in BCCH contexts (including TRC Calls to Action, In Plain Sight, BC Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act, UNDRIP, Reclaiming Power and Place, BC Human Rights Code, Anti-racism Data Act, and related foundational documents).

Core competencies related to Indigenous Cultural Safety and breaking down barriers to ensure a safe environment and sense of belonging.
