We provide accessible, quality, culturally safe and holistic health care that supports and enhances the wellness of individuals, families, and communities.

We work with our 11 First Nation community partners and the Indigenous Friendship Centre in the provision of primary health care, traditional healing, mental wellness and addictions, home and community support services, and health promotion services.

The opportunity: Under the supervision of the Mental Wellness Manager, the Mental Wellness Brief Services Counsellor is responsible for providing culturally appropriate mental wellness assessment, counselling, and support services to Indigenous adults (18+ years) in collaboration with Maamwesying North Shore Community Health Services partner sites.

The role emphasizes high‑quality service delivery through adherence to agency policies and procedures, quality assurance practices, and accurate electronic medical record documentation.

The Mental Wellness Brief Services Counsellor supports the integration of traditional Indigenous and Western healing approaches by fostering cultural awareness, facilitating access to traditional healers, and supporting culturally grounded care planning for individual clients.

This position operates in a fast‑paced environment and requires flexibility to respond to shifting community needs, including changes to schedules and service priorities.

What you need to bring with you: Preference will be given to individuals with a B.S.W. or M.S.W. (or equivalent) and a minimum of two (2) years of related experience.

Current registration, or eligibility for registration, in good standing with the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers or The College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario is required.

Proven clinical abilities and skills to provide counselling services to adults experiencing significant mental health challenges.

Demonstrated knowledge of First Nation mental health issues, history, culture, and community contexts.

Experience and understanding of Anishinabek health perspectives and traditional healing practices.

Ability to work collaboratively with community frontline workers, health practitioners, clinical supervisors, and mental health specialists.

Strong organizational, documentation, and case management skills.

Proficiency with computer applications and electronic medical record / case management systems.

Excellent oral and written communication skills.

A clear criminal reference check is a condition of employment.

Access to a reliable personal vehicle and willingness to travel regularly throughout the seven (7) Maamwesying area communities.

Valid Ontario driver’s licence.

Ability to work a flexible schedule, including evenings, weekends, and hours outside of regular business hours as required.

Given the traditional practices of Indigenous people, from time-to-time exposure to smoke from the burning of sacred medicines such as tobacco, sweet grass, sage or cedar may occur.
