Serve as the clinical lead and clinical liaison for POCT and phlebotomy across Providence Health Care (PHC) sites.
Ensure bedside testing and specimen collection processes meet Laboratory Standards, DAP requirements, and PLMS quality expectations.
Provide best-practice clinical resource for venipuncture, capillary collection, patient identification, and specimen integrity.
Support development and monitoring of the POCT program, including policies, procedures, job aids, and training materials.
Participate in validation, verification, and quality review of new POCT devices and methodologies.
Conduct routine audits on clinical units to assess operator practices, device use, documentation, and quality indicators.
Reduce pre-analytical errors (e.g., mislabeling, hemolysis, incorrect tubes, improper handling/transport).
Provide consultation, coaching, and competency assessment to nursing and allied health staff who collect specimens.
Support POCT operator training, re-training, and annual competency assessments.
Participate in quality investigations, incident reviews (PSLS), and follow-up actions related to POCT or phlebotomy.
Support workflow improvements across outpatient, inpatient, and specialized units (e.g., renal, ICU, emergency).
Provide firsthand coaching during new device implementations and workflow/process updates.
Develop evidence-based training modules, checklists, quick reference guides, and orientation materials.
Participate in relevant programs and professional committees related to POCT and phlebotomy practice.
Perform other related duties as assigned
RN registration with the British Columbia College of Nurses & Midwives (BCCNM).
Graduation from an approved School of Nursing.
Three (3) years of recent related nursing experience in an acute care hospital, including POCT and phlebotomy practice.
Demonstrated knowledge of evidence-based nursing practice related to medical practices in a tertiary level teaching hospital.
Demonstrated knowledge of POCT, phlebotomy, and specimen handling practices.
Ability to foster effective working relationships and promote trust and respect.
Ability to stay current with POCT and phlebotomy developments and recommend/implement best practices.
Ability to develop quality indicators and provide constructive reports.
Ability to prepare concise and accurate written reports and document procedures/processes for SOP development.
Ability to plan strategically and implement programs, procedures, and processes.
Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
Ability to teach, provide orientation, and conduct presentations.
Ability to implement effective problem-solving processes.
