Requires a Registered Nurse license with at least 2 years of acute care inpatient experience and a Coronary Care 1 course. Candidates must be flexible to work across multiple sites and adapt to different unit workflows and patient populations.
The Program-Based Float Pool Registered Nurse will provide direct and indirect nursing care within the assigned clinical program, supporting patient care needs across designated units and sites based on operational requirements, patient acuity, staffing needs, and established program priorities. The successful candidate will be assigned to a home program and may be required to work across multiple units and/or Halton Healthcare sites, including Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital, Milton District Hospital, and Georgetown Hospital, as applicable to the role and program needs. This role is intended to support safe staffing, continuity of care, vacancy coverage, sick call replacement, leaves of absence, surge capacity, education support, and other short-term or emerging operational needs within the program. Assignments will be made in accordance with patient care needs, operational requirements, the nurse’s scope of practice, demonstrated competency, orientation, training, qualifications, and applicable collective agreement provisions. Other duties as required. Key Responsibilities The successful candidate will: Provide safe, competent, patient- and family-centred nursing care within the assigned program. May work across designated units and sites within the assigned program based on operational need and assignment. Support staffing needs related to vacancies, sick calls, leaves of absence, education, surge, onboarding, and other program priorities. Perform comprehensive patient assessments, identify changes in patient condition, and escalate concerns appropriately. Administer medications, treatments, and procedures in accordance with hospital policies, professional standards, and applicable legislation. Collaborate with physicians, nurses, allied health, support services, patients, families, and leaders to support quality care and positive patient outcomes. Support patient flow, transitions in care, discharge planning, and patient/family education. Adapt to different unit workflows, patient populations, documentation requirements, escalation pathways, and site-specific processes. Participate in program-specific orientation, education, mentorship, and competency development. Maintain required competencies and complete required education or validation prior to working independently in specialized or unfamiliar areas. . Maintain accurate and timely documentation in accordance with professional and organizational standards. Demonstrate professionalism, flexibility, adaptability, and accountability in a variety of clinical practice environments. May be required to assume charge nurse responsibilities where appropriate, based on experience, competency, and operational need. Program-Based Float Expectations The Program-Based Float Pool role is designed to provide flexibility within a defined clinical program while supporting safe, consistent, and competent nursing practice. The successful candidate must be willing and able to: Work across designated units within the assigned program. Work across multiple Halton Healthcare sites as required by the program. Travel between sites as operationally required. Accept assignments based on patient care needs, staffing requirements, skill mix, competency, qualifications, and operational priorities. Maintain readiness to work in different clinical environments within the program. Adapt to site-specific workflows, documentation practices, escalation pathways, and interprofessional team structures. Work collaboratively with educators, professional practice, managers, and clinical teams to support continued development and safe practice. Contribute to a collaborative learning environment by sharing program-specific knowledge, site-specific practices, and workflow information with team members, where appropriate and within the expectations of the role. Staff will only be assigned to areas where they have received the appropriate orientation, training, and demonstrated competency. Support development of specialty skills where operationally required, and participate in quality improvement, onboarding, clinical practice, and education initiatives. Participation in upskilling opportunities will be based on program need, staff interest where possible, qualifications, readiness, orientation requirements, demonstrated competency, and applicable collective agreement provisions.

Required qualifications: Program-Specific Qualifications 2 years acute care inpatient RN experience required. Coronary Care 1 course required or commitment to complete within 6 months. Depending on the assigned program, additional qualifications may be required or preferred, including but not limited to: Peritoneal Dialysis Certification, NIHSS Certification. Biotherapy Administration Certification. Acute Care Nurse (Level 2 ICU) certification.
Preference may be given to candidates who have: Surgery experience in post-operative care. Experience as a preceptor. Charge nurse experience considered an asset. Recent experience in more than one unit within the assigned program. Experience working across multiple sites or clinical areas. Demonstrated ability to adapt quickly to changing clinical environments. Demonstrated leadership, mentorship, preceptor, or charge nurse experience. Evidence of ongoing professional development relevant to the program. Interest in developing additional program-specific skills through supported upskilling, orientation, and competency development.
Hours: Various rotating 12 hour shifts - 0730-1930 and 1930 to 0730 (Hours are subject to change based on operational needs) Salary: $41.15 to $58.98 per hour Positions: 5
