  • Up to two (2) years recent, related experience on a unit specific basis.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS), Level C.
  • Physically able to perform the duties of the position.
  • Ability to work independently with limited supervision and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Criminal Record Check (CRC) required due to access to children or vulnerable adults

Job Description

In accordance with the Vision, Purpose, and Values, and strategic direction of the Vancouver Island Health Authority (Island Health) patient and staff safety is a priority and a responsibility shared by everyone; as such, the requirement to continuously improve quality and safety is inherent in all aspects of this position. Working as a member of a multidisciplinary health care team, the Surgical Care Nurse functions as an experienced self-directed surgical care nurse by assessing, planning, providing, and evaluating nursing care for assigned patients.

Qualifications

  • Education, Training And Experience Registration with BC College of Nurses and Midwives as a practicing RN registrant; and Post-basic education in surgical/ambulatory care nursing on a unit specific basis; or An equivalent combination of education and training. Up to two (2) years recent, related experience on a unit specific basis. Basic Life Support, Level C Skills And Abilities
  • Apply nursing process as required and described in BC College of Nurses and Midwives Standards of Nursing Practice
  • Demonstrate sound organizational, problem solving, and teaching skills
  • Demonstrate sound judgement, observation and patient assessment skills
  • Demonstrate tact and empathy
  • Prioritize and organize patient demands made and care needs
  • Operate related equipment
  • Remain calm and respond appropriately in stressful and emergency situations
  • Work as part of a multidisciplinary health care team
  • Foster good public relations
  • Communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing
