This employment opportunity is restricted to residents of Iqaluit only.

Reporting to the Mental Health and Addictions (MHA) Supervisor, the purpose of the Mental Health and Addictions Outreach Worker is to provide front-line mental health and addiction services for clients dealing with mental health illness, suicidal ideation, family violence, and/or addictions. The MHA Outreach Worker will establish supportive client relationships through the delivery of community-based programs by helping them navigate services, with the goal of empowering clients and their support network to actively participate in mental health wellness. This position will reinforce, practice and model therapeutic techniques and treatments as part of the MHA care team.

The MHA Outreach Worker will be responsible for

  • Providing practical help and support, advocacy, coordination, individualized support, problem solving, direct assistance and training to help clients obtain the skills necessary to improve their mental well-being.
  • Providing support and guidance in accessing the health and other services identified as needed by the client, family, or MHA team.
  • Supporting service delivery by identifying community needs and developing, coordinating and facilitating programs and promoting the success of wellness initiatives.
  • Working closely with the health care team and community organizations to promote mental health wellness.
  • Providing one on one support for a person experiencing a mental health and/or addictions crisis.
  • Escorting low- to medium-risk clients to and from other communities or out-of-territory facilities when appropriate.
  • Demonstrating awareness of Inuit culture and traditions and incorporating this knowledge into practice.
  • The knowledge, skills, and experience required for this job are usually obtained through a recognized:
  • Diploma in social services, mental health or related field.
  • Two (2) years of experience working in mental health or a related field.
  • A valid driver’s license is considered as an asset.
  • Current First Aid and Basic Cardiac Life Support are also considered as assets.

This is a Highly Sensitive Position and a satisfactory Criminal Record Check, along with a clear Vulnerable Sector Check is required.

The Official Languages of Nunavut are Inuktut, English and French. Applicants may submit their resume in any of the official languages of Nunavut. Fluency in more than one of Nunavut’s official languages would be considered an asset. Knowledge of Inuit communities, culture, land,Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit, Inuktut and experience working in a northern cross-cultural environment are also considered assets.
