The Opportunity: Reporting to the Director of Care, the Clinical Extern supports the delivery of safe, ethical, and effective care while advocating for patient wellbeing.
The role is supported by a supervising nurse (RN or RPN) and the Nursing Leadership Team.
Clinical Externs work as Unregulated Care Providers (UCPs) in collaboration with the interdisciplinary healthcare team and under the supervision of a designated Regulated Health Professional (RHP).
Externs will have varying levels of clinical knowledge, skills, and judgment based on their education and prior experience.
What Is In It For You: Provide patient care in accordance with organizational policies, professional standards, and the limitations of the role.
Assist with activities of daily living, including ambulation, toileting, bathing, feeding, and comfort measures.
Participate in additional patient assessments such as BP, Vitals, Head to toe, pain, PPS.
Contribute to LTCF documentation by assisting with completing coding, updating care plans and assisting with audits.
Will work closely with their supervisor on Physician Days to execute orders, improve communication and learn practice.
Assess skin and wound integrity with supervision.
Will work closely with Skin and Wound Lead, RAI Coordinator, BSO Lead, IPAC lead and Nurse Practitioner.
Contribute and complete BSO rounds.
Organize and implement a PSW training in-service of the home’s choice.
Participate in patient assessments (e.g., mental status exams, suicide risk assessments, physical health checks).
Alert the healthcare team to any changes or concerns related to patient condition.
Request assistance whenever required to ensure safe and competent care.
Contribute to care planning, safety planning, and evaluation of care.
Assist with lifting, transferring, turning, transporting, and ambulating patients as needed.
Maintain a clean, safe, and hazard‑free environment.
Participate in transfer of accountability at shift change and breaks.
Demonstrate professionalism, effective communication, and positive team engagement.
Maintain confidentiality in accordance with organizational policies.
Attend all scheduled shifts and notify the Manager of absences prior to shift start.
Satisfactory performance and attendance are required throughout the term of employment.
What You Will Need: Enrolled in a College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) approved: Baccalaureate Nursing Program (Years 1–4, preference given to Years 3 and 4), or Practical Nursing Program (final year).
Demonstrated excellent academic standing.
Evidence of successful learning experiences in recent clinical placements.
Current Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) certification.
Strong interpersonal, communication, and teamwork skills.
Excellent problem‑solving, decision‑making, and critical‑thinking abilities.
Strong organizational and time‑management skills.
Computer literacy.
Knowledge of infection prevention and control practices (asset).
Psychiatric / mental health clinical experience is an asset.
Ability to work with individuals from diverse cultural and social backgrounds.
Bilingualism (French/English) or proficiency in another language is an asset.
Salary
$27.00 per hour Salary placement based on qualifications and experience.
