Position Summary

In accordance with the established vision and values of the organization, the Nurse Practitioner is responsible and accountable for the comprehensive assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of patients, including healthcare management, therapeutic interventions, and prescribing medications within statutory and regulatory standards and WFN policies. The Nurse Practitioner provides professional guidance to other health professionals and practices both autonomously and collaboratively within an interdisciplinary healthcare team, making referrals to specialists and other providers as appropriate.

This position is a 0.5 FTE contracted Nurse Practitioner role (approximately 840 hours annually), providing services as an independent contractor in alignment with Westbank First Nation (WFN) and Primary Care Network (PCN) requirements. The Nurse Practitioner delivers culturally appropriate, community-informed care reflective of WFN values and priorities, while participating in team-based care and PCN activities.

The role includes both longitudinal, panel-based primary care and same-day or episodic (walk-in) services. The Nurse Practitioner collaborates with patients, families, and care teams to identify trends and patterns impacting health outcomes, contributes to population health strategies and service improvement, and participates in evaluation, quality improvement, and policy development activities.

  • Registration in good standing as a Nurse Practitioner with the College of Registered Nurses of British Columbia (CRNBC) required
  • Successful completion of Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) required
  • Interior Health Emotional Intelligence LEADS Competencies
  • Valid BC Driver's license with clean driving record required
  • 3-5 years NP experience beneficial

    • Job duties/Responsibilties
    • Diagnose and treat previously undiagnosed patients/clients/residents for undifferentiated diseases, disorders, and conditions within the Nurse Practitioner's scope of practice; write orders for treatment and medications; and provide first-line care in emergencies.
    • Monitor ongoing care, order appropriate screening diagnostic investigations, interpret reports of investigations, and analyze information to monitor progress and plan treatment.
    • Establish priorities for management of health, diseases, disorders, and conditions; provide follow-up treatment; communicate with patients/clients/residents and families about health findings, diagnoses, priorities, outcomes, and prognoses; support and counsel patients/clients/residents in their responses to diseases, disorders, and conditions.
    • Collaborate and consult with physicians or other healthcare and social service providers as appropriate to assess and diagnose patient/client/resident status. Develop and implement treatment plans. May admit and discharge patients/clients/residents to facilities according to organizational policies.
    • Prescribe drugs within the statutory and regulatory standards, limits, and conditions for Nurse Practitioners and within applicable WFN policies and procedures.
    • Provide longitudinal primary care to an assigned patient panel
    • Patient attachment and panel composition will be determined by WFN based on community needs and appropriateness.
    • Participate in the development and gradual expansion of a patient panel, recognizing a reasonable ramp-up period to achieve target panel size.
    • Provide walk-in, episodic, and same-day care services, including assessment and treatment of acute and urgent presentations. (something about the details of the walk-in hours/time could be added)
    • Balance clinical responsibilities across panel-based care, walk-in services, and indirect patient care activities as determined by WFN.
    • Assign work to other nursing and healthcare personnel, evaluate work, provide education, and supervision as necessary.
    • Participate in research contributing to improved patient/client/resident care and advances in nursing, health policy development, and population health.
    • Maintain population health focus by implementing screening and health promotion activities for populations at risk.
    • Participate in interdisciplinary staff and nursing education through case presentations; mentoring; role modeling; and facilitating the exchange of knowledge in the classroom, the clinical setting, and the community. Foster healthcare partnerships.
    • Develop, implement, and evaluate policies and procedures related to nursing, interdisciplinary care, and health system practices.
    • Perform other related duties as required.
    • Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
    • Demonstrates a high degree of confidentiality in interpersonal interaction
    • Working knowledge of the history of colonization in Canada and its ongoing impact on modern issues affecting Indigenous Peoples
    • Working knowledge in communicating with Indigenous Peoples, demonstrating sensitivity and empathy, and awareness of how language choices can influence and impact conversations.
    • Ability to communicate and collaborate with patients/clients/residents and families about health findings, diagnosis, treatment, self-care, and prognosis.
    • Ability to collaborate, consult with, and formally refer patients/clients/residents to physicians and other health professionals when appropriate.
    • Ability to critically assess and evaluate health research literature to determine best practices; ability to introduce education and evidence-based research.
    • Ability to assess and recognize population health trends and the ability to plan and implement strategies for population-based prevention and health promotion.
    • Ability to implement and evaluate planned change.
    • Ability to supervise others and evaluate the care they deliver.
    • Ability to lead and work within a team.
    • Ability to self-direct, interact, and adapt effectively with other professionals in complex, dynamic situations.
    • Ability to transfer knowledge, teach, coach, and mentor others.
    • Ability to identify and respond appropriately to legal and ethical issues that may arise in patient/ resident/client care.
    • Ability to self-assess performance and assume responsibility and accountability for own professional development, educational, or consultative assistance when appropriate.
    • Physical ability to perform the duties of the position.

    The Median Salary for this position is $128,182.53

    This is a Term position set to end March 30, 2029
