About the role

Assist in the preparation and induction of anesthesia, including preoperative checkout/calibration and equipment needs for each case.

Assist with patient preparation including pre-operative assessment, positioning, and invasive line setup.

Assist with and/or perform insertion of devices (oro/nasogastric tubes, IV and intra-arterial catheters) under supervision.

Assist with establishing arterial lines and with central line, Swan Ganz, and TEE placement.

Assist with neuraxial techniques (epidural, spinal, regional anesthesia).

Establish, monitor, and support management of the airway including difficult airway assistance and topicalization.

Assist in documentation of patient data on the anesthetic record.

Under supervision, assist with and/or perform procedural sedation as directed.

Monitor intra-operative patient status and intervene as instructed (airway management, NG placement, temperature control, ABGs, hemodynamic calculations, glucose testing).

Prepare and administer prescribed pharmacological agents to maintain anesthesia adequacy and hemodynamic stability.

Respond to and assist with intraoperative crises (cardiac arrest, malignant hyperthermia, failed intubation, hemorrhage).

Administer blood and blood products including autotransfusion (Cell Saver).

Maintain and stock pediatric, difficult intubation, hemodynamic, and malignant hyperthermia carts.

Assist anesthesiologist with emergence from anesthesia (titration, airway maintenance, mechanical ventilation titration, extubation) and postoperative ventilation management.

Assist with cases outside the OR (MRI, CT scan, Interventional suites, Cath Lab, Endoscopy)

Assist in the preparation and induction of anesthesia including Preoperative checkout/calibration of the Anesthetic workstation and provision of anticipated equipment needs for each case. Assist with patient preparation by performing duties such as pre-operative patient assessment, positioning, invasive line setup.

Assist with and/or performs the insertion of devices such as oro or nasogastric tubes, intravenous, and intra-arterial catheters under the supervision of the attending anesthesiologist. Assist with establishing arterial lines and assist with central line, Swan Ganz, TEE placement. Assist with neuraxial techniques such as epidural, spinal and regional anesthesia. Establishing, monitoring and management of the airway, including assistance with difficult airways and topicalization.

Assist in the documentation of patient data on the Anesthetic Record.

Under the supervision of the attending anesthesiologist, assist and/or perform procedural sedation as directed. Assist anesthesiologist with emergence from anesthesia including Titration of anesthetic, airway maintenance, titration of mechanical ventilation and extubation. Transfer, transportation and postoperative management of ventilation.

Assist anesthesiologist with cases outside of the O.R. such as MRI, CT scan, Interventional suites, Cath Lab and Endoscopy. What you bring

Qualifications

  • Graduation from an accredited Respiratory Therapy program. One year of critical care experience or two years’ experience in an acute care environment.
  • Active enrolment in the Certificate of Anesthesia Assistant program
  • Membership in the Canadian Society of Respiratory Therapists (CSRT), and the British Columbia Society of Respiratory Therapists (BCSRT).
  • Current Basic Cardiac Life Support
  • Demonstrate comprehensive knowledge of the historic and ongoing impacts of settler colonialism and systemic racism on Indigenous Peoples within social and health contexts. This includes understanding how these factors contribute to current health disparities and barriers to care. Show a clear commitment to identifying, challenging, and eradicating Indigenous-specific racism and all forms of discrimination impacting equity-deserving groups within healthcare settings. This involves recognizing personal biases, institutional barriers, engaging in anti-racism education and training and advocating for systemic change.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of legislative obligations and provincial commitments within BC Women's Hospital & Health Centre contexts found in the foundational documents including Truth & Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action (2015), In Plain Sight (2020), BC's Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act (2019), United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP), Reclaiming Power and Place Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women & Girls Calls for Justice (2019), the Declaration Act Action Plan and Remembering Keegan: A First Nations Case Study, BC Human Rights Code, Anti-racism Data Act and how they intersect across the health care system.   • Brings an understanding of the Indigenous specific racism and the broader systemic racism that exists in the colonial health care structure, and has demonstrated leadership in breaking down barriers and ensuring an environment of belonging. Embed Indigenous Cultural Safety and Humility into all aspects of work. This means creating an environment where Indigenous patients feel respected, valued, and understood. Foster trust through respectful communication, active listening, and honoring equity-deserving people's perspectives on health and wellness. Commit to ongoing education and training on Indigenous health issues, cultural safety, and DEI principles. Participate in workshops, cultural immersion experiences, and continuous professional development to stay informed and responsive to equity-deserving groups. Provide patient-centred care that respects Indigenous ways of knowing and healing, respects BIPOC experiences and world views ensuring that care plans are culturally relevant and holistic.

Requirements

Graduation from an accredited Respiratory Therapy program.

One year of critical care experience or two years’ experience in an acute care environment.

Active enrolment in the Certificate of Anesthesia Assistant program.

Membership in the Canadian Society of Respiratory Therapists (CSRT) and the British Columbia Society of Respiratory Therapists (BCSRT).
