FIT Placement Student

Nature of position

• Collaborate effectively with the Society’s service teams and families.
• Liaise with internal and external service providers, and work in conjunction with the overall case plan as set out by the service team.
• Assist in providing support in-home, in-office, and in the community.
• Participate in the assessment of the family’s functioning, quality of interactions, and caregiver-child relationships.
• Contribute to the assessment of parenting skill/behaviour, and how caregivers are able to understand and/or meet their child’s needs.
• Assist in the development of recommendations to ensure family and child wellbeing, as well as strengthen relationships and parenting skill/behaviour.
• Participate in in-home visits and/or Therapeutic Access visits between caregivers and children.
• Assist in providing intervention, through discussion, modeling, and instruction, in order to address the recommendations, mitigate risk, and build safety for the family and child.
• Contribute to the preparation and provision of assessment outcomes to the family and service team.
• Support the completion of formal written assessments on a regular basis.
• Complete documentation of all communications in a fulsome and timely manner.
• Assist in the completion of court documentation as required.
• Work with the student mentor and the broader team towards program development goals, and participate in regular team meetings and case consults.
• Provide childcare support once per week during the 8-Week Circle of Security Parenting Program (2 hours per session), ensuring that children are engaged and safely monitored at all times while the program is active.

Required knowledge and skills

• Knowledge of the Child, Youth and Family Services Act and other pertinent legislation, as well as Ministry standards and guidelines, directives and procedures.
• Knowledge of individual level, family system level, and macro level theories, methodologies and practices, and the ability to integrate theory and practice.
• Excellent knowledge of childhood development.
• Good analytical skills to identify and resolve problems, assess needs and strengths, help to formulate recommendations, and determine actions specific to the needs of the child and family.
• Individual, marital and family therapy skills to support the provision of a broad range of therapeutic services to meet the needs of families and children.
• Good decision-making skills to assist in determining actions required, helping to ensure for the protection of children.
• Strong crisis intervention skills to help determine the degree of risk to a child, support the diffusion of potentially hostile situations, and to take appropriate action to reduce risk accordingly.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills to document information in a clear, concise, and accurate manner.
• Good organizational skills to prioritize tasks, be self-initiating, and to work independently with the support of your student mentor.
• Excellent interpersonal skills to liaise with community professionals and other Society staff.
• Knowledge of available community services within York Region and environs is considered a strong asset.

Required education and qualifications

• Currently enrolled in a Child & Youth Worker Diploma from a recognized Community College, or a closely related human services program at the Advanced Diploma or Bachelors level.
• Driver’s License and access to a reliable vehicle for the duration of the placement opportunity is required.
• Ability to work during evenings and occasional weekends is a required.

Hours of work

Up to 33.75 hours per week. Some flexibility is supported to meet the needs of the Placement Student’s Educational Requirements.
