Ultrasound Technologist

Position overview

The Ultrasound Technologist is responsible for performing high-quality diagnostic ultrasound examinations while ensuring exceptional patient care and safety. The role requires the ability to accurately identify anatomical structures and pathological processes, differentiate artefacts from diagnostic findings, and provide technical impressions to the Radiologist. The Ultrasound Technologist works collaboratively within the Diagnostic Imaging team to support efficient patient flow, maintain equipment and supplies, and uphold organizational values, professional standards, and patient confidentiality.

Duties & Responsibilities

Patient Care & Safety

  • Provide safe, compassionate, and patient-centered care throughout the examination process.
  • Verify patient identification, preparation, and safety prior to all procedures.
  • Ensure patient comfort, dignity, and confidentiality are maintained before, during, and after examinations.
  • Explain examination procedures clearly and respond appropriately to patient questions and concerns.
  • Monitor patients during procedures and respond appropriately to urgent or unexpected situations.

Diagnostic Imaging Responsibility

  • Perform diagnostic ultrasound examinations in accordance with departmental protocols, professional standards, and physician requests.
  • Produce high-quality diagnostic images and recognize anatomical structures and pathological conditions during examinations.
  • Differentiate artefactual findings from normal and pathological processes.
  • Perform examinations including abdominal, OB/GYN, small parts, and vascular ultrasound procedures as required.
  • Adapt imaging techniques to routine and non-routine clinical situations while exercising sound judgment and decision-making skills.
  • Accurately document technical findings, patient history, and preliminary impressions for Radiologist interpretation.

Required qualifications

Education: Registered graduate from an approved Ultrasound Technologist Diploma Program

Current Sonography Canada registration

Current CMRITO registration

  • Knowledge, skills, & abilities
  • Advanced knowledge and demonstrated competency in abdominal, OB/GYN, and small parts sonography.
  • Vascular Ultrasound experience considered an asset.
  • Nuchal Translucency accreditation considered an asset.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform high-quality diagnostic imaging in both routine and non-routine circumstances.
  • Proven ability to make frequent and independent decisions while performing technological procedures and assessing diagnostic results.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to interact professionally and compassionately with patients, families, physicians, and colleagues.
  • Demonstrated ability to build and maintain positive working relationships within a collaborative healthcare environment.
