The Occupational Therapist provides direct therapy services to residents to optimize health outcomes and independence. They are responsible for assessing needs, developing treatment plans, and collaborating with the interdisciplinary team to facilitate resident care.
Candidates must hold a Master’s Degree in Occupational Therapy and have at least one year of recent related experience. Current registration with the College of Occupational Therapists of BC is required.
Reporting to the Director of Care, this position works without general supervision and provides occupational therapy services to enable residents to achieve and maintain optimal health outcomes.
Qualifications: Education, Training, and Experience
Master’s Degree in Occupational Therapy plus one (1) year recent related experience, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
Current registration with the College of Occupational Therapists of BC (COTBC).
Eligible for membership with the Canadian Association of Occupational Therapists (CAOT).
Skills and Abilities
Working knowledge of occupational therapy theory and practice including the application of standardized tests/tools and measures.
Working knowledge of the determinants of health and health promotion principles and practices.
Working knowledge of community health agencies and available community resources.
Demonstrated ability to successfully analyze situations, problem solve and facilitate resolutions.
Demonstrated ability to plan, implement, evaluate and modify rehabilitation services.
Demonstrated ability to prescribe and/or recommend a variety of self-aids and rehabilitation equipment.
Demonstrated ability to conduct relevant assessments per established standards of practice.
Demonstrated ability to independently plan, organize and prioritize workload.
Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing, and work effectively as a member of an interdisciplinary team.
Demonstrated ability to plan, deliver and evaluate health education for individuals and groups.
Demonstrated ability to develop and maintain collaborative working relationships with residents, caregivers/families and community partners.
Demonstrated computer knowledge in relevant software applications.
Working knowledge of research process and methodology.
Physical ability to carry out the duties of the position.
Meets the resident’s goals and needs by providing quality care including assessing and interpreting evaluations and test results, and determining occupational therapy treatment plans in consultation with physicians and other clinicians and members of the Allied Health team, or by prescription.
Offers therapy/therapeutic programs to residents, promoting maximum independence by selecting and constructing therapies according to an individual’s physical capacity and interest and promoting their ability to make choices and manage risk.
Documents assessments and therapies by charting in resident and department records. Maintains residents’ confidence by keeping information confidential.
Ensures operation of equipment by completing preventative maintenance requirements, following manufacturer’s instructions, troubleshooting malfunctions, and calling for repairs. Works collaboratively with residents and their families with regards to equipment rentals and purchases.
Attends meetings and collaborates in quality working groups such as wound care, restraint reduction and falls.
Maintains professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops, reviewing professional publications, establishing professional networks with peers in the long-term care community, and participating in professional societies.
Provides clinical work direction to Rehabilitation Assistants, contributing to the evaluation of their performance as required.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
