The Clinical Perfusionist is responsible for setting up, operating, and maintaining critical equipment like the heart-lung machine, intra-aortic balloon pump, ECMO, and VADs. This role also involves performing various blood analyses, quality control, equipment calibration, training other professionals, and participating in perfusion-related research projects.
Candidates must possess an advanced certificate in Cardiovascular Perfusion or an acceptable diploma, along with a Basic Life Support Certificate (BLS). Eligibility for registration with the appropriate licensing body and successful completion of the certifying exam from the Canadian Society of Clinical Perfusion are also required.

The Clinical Perfusionist sets up, operates and maintains the heart lung machine and related equipment such as the intra-aortic balloon pump, autotransfusion devices, ecmo and vads . The incumbent is responsible for routinely checking all hardware and maintains perfusion related equipment and disposables stock on an ongoing basis, carries out blood gas, heparin concentration, activated clotting time and thrombelastograph analysis as well as quality control and calibration of those analyzers. The incumbent also acquaints other health care professionals with the perfusionists handling and use of equipment. They initiate, participate in and complete research projects in perfusion related areas.
