Job Description

In accordance with the Vision, Purpose, and Values, and strategic direction of Island Health (Vancouver Island Health Authority), patient and staff safety are a priority and a responsibility shared by everyone; as such, the requirement to continuously improve quality and safety is inherent in all aspects of this position. Reporting to the Team Leader, Administrative Services, the Program Assistant provides support to the Preventative and Perinatal Services Program of Population and Public Health. The Program Assistant provides a variety of clerical and administrative support duties utilizing a variety of computerized applications. Supports the program by performing duties such as maintaining inventories of supplies, booking appointments, gathering of client information; schedules and conducts vision and/or hearing screening for preschool/school aged children in a school or clinic setting. Reporting to BC Early Hearing Program Regional Coordinator/Senior Audiologist, the Program Assistant also performs newborn hearing screening and school hearing screening. Following the BC Early Hearing Program (BCEHP) protocols and competencies, identifies, triages, screens and refers newborns for follow up. Works with families and professionals in the community at various sites, including health units, hospitals and schools.

Qualifications

  • Education, Training And Experience
  • Grade 12.
  • Medical Office Assistant Certificate, including courses in word processing, spreadsheet and database software.
  • Two (2) years recent related administrative experience in a similar environment.
  • Completion of BCCDC Vaccine Storage & Handling course.
  • Recent related experience working with newborn infants and their families or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience with hearing screening and office administration.
  • Valid BC Class 5 Driver's License. Skills And Abilities
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both verbally and in writing, using family-centered care principles in hearing screening.

Requirements

Grade 12 education..

Medical Office Assistant Certificate with training in word processing, spreadsheet, and database software..

Two years of recent related administrative experience in a similar environment..

Completion of the BCCDC Vaccine Storage & Handling course..

Recent experience working with newborn infants and their families, or equivalent education, training, and experience in hearing screening and office administration..

Valid BC Class 5 Driver's License..

Ability to communicate clearly and effectively using family-centered care principles..

Ability to work independently and collaboratively..

Knowledge of medical terminology and general office procedures..

Proficiency with computers, databases, and Microsoft Office..

Ability to plan, organize, prioritize, analyze, and resolve problems..

Physical ability to perform the duties of the position.
