About the role

The Dental Hygienist delivers oral health programming and services, including community and school-based screenings and clinical preventative treatments. They also provide oral health expertise to staff, the public, and community leaders to promote optimal oral care.

Under the direction of the Manager, Dental & Vision, the Dental Hygienist delivers oral health programming & services as required by the Ontario Public Health Standards, associated oral health protocols and the Health Protection and Promotion Act.

The Dental Hygienist provides community & school-based oral health screening, assessment, full range of clinical preventative treatment & instruction, including health promotion, disease prevention, and program evaluation and planning, in order to promote optimal oral care for all St.

Thomas, Oxford, and Elgin County residents.

The Dental Hygienist contributes to raising St.

Thomas, Oxford, and Elgin County’s awareness and knowledge of the importance of oral health as it relates to overall health.

The Dental Hygienist provides oral health expertise to other Health Unit staff, the public, the media, professionals, and other community leaders.

The casual position will require the successful candidate to work out of both the Woodstock and St.

Thomas offices.

Qualifications

EDUCATION Successful completion of a three (3) year accredited registered Dental Hygiene Program from a post-secondary institution as recognized in the province of Ontario Must be licensed to practice in Ontario by the College of Dental Hygienists of Ontario, and a member in good standing; proof of annual renewal is required KNOWLEDGE & EXPERIENCE Minimum one (1) year on the job experience and training and at least one (1) year of clinical experience Knowledge of legislation (Ontario Public Health Standards) SKILLS & ABILITIES Excellent clinical skills are required to provide effective clinical treatment to clients who have not sought treatment for an extended period of time Self-initiation of dental hygiene designation in accordance with the Dental Hygiene Act A high degree of interpretative analysis is required to determine presence of dental disease Excellent interpersonal skills Proficient computer skills Experience with children and youth would be an asset SPECIAL CONDITIONS Valid Ontario Driver’s license and access to a reliable insured vehicle Ability to work flexible hours when necessary Must comply with the current Ontario Public Health Standards Adherence to SWPH’s policies and procedures Terms and conditions of employment are in accordance with CUPE Collective Agreement.

Salary Range

$39.82/hr to $44.63/hr based on verification of qualifications and experience. (70 hours in a two-week period).

Will receive vacation pay each pay period as well as pay in lieu of benefits following successful completion of the probationary period.

Offered enrollment in the OMERS pension plan (if enrolled, in lieu benefits will reduce).

Southwestern Public Health provides a flexible work environment.

Hybrid work arrangements are available for some positions, depending on the program and operational requirements.

Candidates are required to maintain a current valid Ontario Driver’s license and reliable access to an insured working vehicle.

A criminal reference check completed within the last six (6) months from a Canadian Police Information Centre (CPID), inclusive of vulnerable sector screening, will be required of the successful candidate.

Immunization Requirements

Fully vaccinated against COVID-19, are able to provide proof of immunization, and acknowledgement to follow Southwestern Public Health's policies and processes related to COVID-19 management in the workplace.
