About the role

Directly implement Covenant House philosophy, mission statement, and policies as they pertain to transitional housing.

Build professional supportive relationships with Rights of Passage (ROP) participants and support their plans.

Maintain physical and electronic files in ETO.

Support participants through orientation and their transition to independent living or other supportive housing.

Utilize a trauma-informed approach and maintain relentless engagement with participants.

Facilitate at least two group life skills sessions monthly and provide occasional individual life skills.

Conduct ongoing assessment of participants' needs.

Provide individual counseling and complete referrals to community supports.

Provide crisis intervention during physical confrontations, medical emergencies, and psychiatric emergencies.

Support participants in daily life skills (personal hygiene, laundry, cooking, budgeting, room cleanliness) through one-on-one work.

Advocate for participants within the organization and with external partners.

Serve in a shift coordinating role, delegating responsibilities and taking primary accountability for safety of people and the environment.

Conduct reception functions and monitor building spaces to ensure safety.

Manage external environment by completing building checks and searches when requested by supervisor.

Assist in training new staff

Since 1982, Covenant House has supported more than 100,000 young people.

Overview

In this position, the candidate will be responsible for direct implementation of Covenant House’s philosophy, mission statement and policies as they pertain to transitional housing. We are currently hiring 1 Full Time, Permanent Youth Worker, this is a replacement position. This position is Self Scheduling position requiring 8 shifts within a two week period, working more than 5 consecutive days straight. The successful candidate must work a minimum of 4 weekend shifts per month (Friday, Saturday, & Sunday). available shifts include days 8:00am - 4:00pm, evenings 3:00pm- 1:1:00pm, overnights 10:30pm- 8:30am. Shifts are schedules across Monday through Sunday.

Job

Responsibilities: Building professional supportive relationship with ROP participants and supporting their plans including maintaining physical and electronic files in ETO. Supporting participants through orientation, their experiences in program and successful transition to independent living or other supportive housing. Utilize a trauma-informed approach and relentless engagement with participants. Facilitating at least two group life skill sessions monthly and providing occasional individual life skills with participants. Ongoing assessment of participants' needs; providing individual counseling and completing referrals to other supports in the community. Crisis intervention in situations of physical confrontation, medical and psychiatric emergencies, and for participants who have recently experienced trauma. Support participants in their life skills development by working one on one with them on daily routines such as personal hygiene, laundry, cooking, budgeting and room cleanliness. Advocating for participants both within the organization and external partners. Shift coordinating role that includes delegating responsibilities among staff team on shift and taking primary accountability for the safety of everyone and the environment. Conducting reception functions and monitoring of various spaces in the building to ensure safety. Management of the external environment; by supervisor’s request completing building checks and searches. Assisting in training of new staff.

Qualification,

Experience: College or university degree or diploma in child and youth work or equivalent. Minimum two years’ experience in a shelter or transitional housing program. Demonstrated ability of using trauma-informed approach working with young people. Understanding of case management principles and practices and relentless engagement. Knowledge of adolescent developmental theory and specific issues related to youth experiencing homelessness. First Aid, CPR, UMAB and basic computer skills (SMIS, ETO, Word, Excel, etc.) an asset. Ability to identify, assess and intervene differentially with youth in crisis. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Knowledge of community resources. Don’t meet every requirement?
