Position Overview We are seeking a reliable and detail-oriented temporary, full-time Laboratory Technician – Wastewater – Training Opportunity to support the monitoring and compliance of municipal wastewater treatment operations at the City of Kamloops. The successful candidate will perform routine and specialized testing of wastewater, sludge, and related samples to ensure regulatory standards are met and environmental protection goals are achieved. This is Kamloops! The successful candidate must have the following qualifications:

Completion of a post-secondary degree in biology, microbiology, or a related field and 6 months experience in a wastewater treatment facility or related lab experience.

Valid BC Driver's Licence - Class 5. This is a temporary role until the return of incumbent and a minimum of six (6) months. For further information on the Laboratory Technician – Wastewater Training Opportunity position, please see the attached job description for the fully qualified position and the attached training opportunity terms and conditions. Awarding of Training Opportunity: To be successful for this training opportunity, applicants must meet the above requirements. Applicants are able to participate in a maximum of two training opportunities within the Department. On-the-Job Experience and Training: The successful candidate for this opportunity will be gaining experience towards becoming a fully qualified Laboratory Technician – Wastewater. The exact length of the training opportunity may vary based on the previous experience of the successful candidate and the length of the position but will be a maximum of 1.5 years. Pay Rate: The successful applicant for this training opportunity will receive the pay rate of Pay Grade 11 (Outside), $39.592 per hour to start. After successful completion of 1.5 years of experience in a wastewater treatment facility or related lab experience, the incumbent will move to a pay rate of Pay Grade 12 (Outside), as a fully qualified Laboratory Technician – Wastewater. Time Commitment to the Position: The successful candidate will be required to remain in the position for a minimum of the amount of time it took the candidate to become fully qualified. Probationary Period: The probationary period for this position will be a maximum of six (6) months. This is a unionized position with CUPE Local 900; check out our Collective Agreement (2024 - 2025) for full details (ratified 2026 Collective Agreement coming soon). As this is a unionized position, all qualifications must be met in order to be shortlisted for the position. For new hires, and for those working in designated positions of trust, including those working directly with vulnerable persons, no formal offer of employment will be made until an applicant completes a police information check. This position will receive 14% in lieu of all benefits, vacation, stat holidays, and health time. Hours & Days of Work Monday – Friday: 6:00 AM – 3:00 PM and 7:00 AM – 3:00 PM This position is being hired under a modified work schedule (one extra day off every third week).
