About the role

Provide professional social work of advanced complexity for adult stabilization services.

Assist in resolving complex psychosocial problems.

Conduct casework and counselling using a variety of methods.

Consult extensively with hospital staff and community agencies regarding psychosocial aspects of patients' situations.

Participate in training of Social Work students.

Maintain a trauma-informed approach.

Provide short-term counselling to clients.

Support advance care planning including financial management, health care decisions, and initial goals of care.

Address clients' social, housing, financial, and addiction needs within team-based care.

Coordinate complex discharge planning with clients, family/support services, and the health care team for continued community care and access to services.

Provide short-term relief coverage for other social workers on the same floor.

Act as a Designated Responder under the Adult Guardianship Act: investigate, assess, and intervene in allegations of adult abuse, neglect, and self-neglect.

Collaborate with the Ministry of Children and Families on child protection matters.

Job Description

In accordance with the Vision, Purpose, and Values, and strategic direction of Island Health (Vancouver Island Health Authority), patient and staff safety is a priority and a responsibility shared by everyone; as such, the requirement to continuously improve quality and safety is inherent in all aspects of this position. Reporting to the Clinical Coordinator, performs professional social work of advanced complexity. Assists in resolving complex psychosocial problems. Carries out a variety of casework and counselling methods; consults extensively with hospital staff and community agencies regarding the psychosocial aspects of the patient's situation and participates in the training of Social Work students.

Qualifications

  • Education, Training And Experience Masters of Social Work degree (M.S.W.) from an accredited school of Social Work required. Current full registration with the BC College of Social Workers. Related social work experience, preferably in a medical setting, and demonstrated clinical competence. Skills And Abilities

Link to Full Job Description https://jd.viha.ca/JD772.pdf Additional information for applicants This masters degree of social work position is currently located at the Royal Jubilee Hospital on a specialized unit focusing in on adult stabilization services for clients experiencing opioid use disorder that are medically acute but no longer requiring emergency level intervention. Social workers will work in team-based care and focus in on social, housing, financial and addiction needs of these clients. Advance care planning regarding financial management, health care decisions and initial goals of care is part of the social work role. Short-term counselling is available via the social worker. The social worker maintains a trauma informed approach and is expected to have skills, knowledge and experience in practice with various therapeutic interventions such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, DBT, Motivational Interviewing, Brief Solution-Focused Therapy. Knowledge of various intersecting pieces of legislation such as the Mental health act, Adult Guardianship Act, Health Care Consent Act are examples the clinician needs to have working practice knowledge of. Coordination on complex discharge planning with the client, their family/support services and the health care team for continued care in the community and access to services is one goal of this program. Previous clinical experience working in mental health and substance use will be an asset. Social workers provide short-term relief coverage for other social workers on the same floor of the hospital. All social workers are Designated Responders under the Adult Guardianship Act and must investigate, assess, and intervene in all allegations of Adult abuse, neglect and self-neglect. Social workers collaborate with the Ministry of Children and Families on all matters related to child protection. Requirements

Masters of Social Work (M.S.W.) degree from an accredited school of Social Work.

Current full registration with the BC College of Social Workers.

Related social work experience, preferably in a medical setting, with demonstrated clinical competence.

Required professional registration and/or practice in hospitals in British Columbia.

Ability to use initiative and exercise judgment.

Knowledge of community resources.

Demonstrated effective oral and written communication.

Organizational and prioritization skills.

Ability to work independently on complex matters.

Ability to establish positive interpersonal relationships with staff and patients.

Trauma-informed approach and experience/skills with therapeutic interventions (CBT, DBT, Motivational Interviewing, Brief Solution-Focused Therapy).

Working knowledge of relevant legislation (Mental Health Act, Adult Guardianship Act, Health Care Consent Act).

Ability to coordinate complex discharge planning.

Must be registered with the British Columbia College of Social workers to practice in hospitals.

CRC required for professional registration (criminal record check)
