The Registered Respiratory Therapist will provide comprehensive clinical care across ICU, NICU, Operating Room, and Emergency settings, including airway management and mechanical ventilation. They will also participate in research, resident teaching, and diagnostic pulmonary function testing to support patient outcomes.

This role offers hands-on experience with respiratory technologies— such as neurally adjusted ventilatory assist (NAVA), high-frequency oscillatory ventilation (HFO), and high-frequency jet ventilation (HFJV), EIT (electrical impedance tomography) and TPP (transesophageal pulmonary pressure) allowing you to directly enhance patient care while developing specialized areas of practice.

About the Respiratory Therapy Team Our respiratory therapy team comprises over 100 dedicated professionals who are committed to providing the highest quality care for patients with lung conditions and breathing difficulties.

We deliver a broad range of therapies, including medications, mechanical interventions, and specialty gases, tailored to each patient’s needs.

We support a wide range of clinical areas across both Mount Sinai and Hennick Bridgepoint Hospitals.

In addition to inpatient care, our outpatient efforts empower patients through education, offering programs in asthma/COPD management, and smoking cessation.

The Pulmonary Function lab provides support to our Respirology team by providing a complete range of diagnostic tests including Cardiopulmonary exercise testing and methacholine challenge tests.

Collaboration is central to our approach, with daily virtual huddles for team-wide alignment and ASCOM phone systems enabling specialized communication between our care settings.

In addition to clinical care, we actively engage in research to improve outcomes and share knowledge through education.

In this role you will: Within the ICU: Be responsible for difficult airway management, mechanical ventilation (non-invasive conventional, high frequency oscillation, use of lung protective strategies), nitric oxide/specialty gas therapies, patient transport, open bedside tracheostomy assistance, bronchoscopy assistance, radial arterial line insertion, hemodynamic monitoring, resuscitation and intubation/extubation Provide research and resident teaching

Within the NICU

Be responsible for airway management, intubation/extubation, hemodynamic monitoring, mechanical ventilation (conventional, high frequency oscillation, jet ventilation, and non-invasive), nitric oxide delivery, surfactant instillation, arterial punctures, arterial line monitoring, patient transport, research and resident teaching Be assigned to the case room working with neonatology, anesthesia and nursing to provide care to the newborn and mother

Within the Operating Room

Assist Anesthesiologists as part of the anesthesia care team Be responsible for hemodynamic monitoring, checking and administering blood/blood products, peripheral line insertion (arterial and venous), intubations/extubations, topicalizing upper airway, difficult airway management, post-operative ventilation, and teaching

Within the Emergency Department

Initiate asthma protocol, airway management and ventilation, patient transport and assist with procedural sedation On the medical/surgical wards, carry a Critical Care Response Team pager and be an integral member of the Rapid Response team Provide research and resident teaching

Within the Pulmonary Function Testing (PFT) lab

Work closely with our Respirology team to provide diagnostic tests for the diagnosis and management of lung disease Perform the full spectrum of pulmonary function tests including spirometry, lung volume measurements, DLCO, Methacholine challenge tests and cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET)

Other areas of responsibility include

  • Non-invasive ventilation in our surgical step down unit, blood gases, arterial line insertion and monitoring, spirometry, home oxygen assessment, student education, research and mentorship Perform other duties consistent with the job classification as required

Requirements
