About the role

The Primary Nurse provides patient-centered oncology care and collaborates with oncologists and nursing peers within Disease Site Teams. They are responsible for delivering comprehensive supportive care, navigating the healthcare system, and providing significant telephone-mediated patient support.

Reporting directly to the Clinical Leader, JCC Clinics, the Primary Nurse accepts privileges and responsibilities of authority, accountability and autonomy for patient care and professional development.

The Primary Nurse will provide patient-centred nursing care for oncology patients (within specific disease sites and treatment modalities) and their families based on the values of respect, caring, innovation and accountability.

Primary Nurses work with oncologists and with their nursing peers within Disease Site Teams to plan and deliver care.

Nursing care is provided based upon competencies of direct comprehensive and supportive care, navigating the system, maintaining professional practice, and through collaborative and evidence-based nursing practice.

Primary Nurses deliver significant telephone-mediated care.

Current Certificate of Registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario as a Registered Nurse 2.

Recent two years experience (within the last 5 years) in the care of adult oncology patients in a dedicated oncology setting 3.

Current CON(c) certification 4.

Successful completion of Registered Nurse Physical Assessment Course, or equivalent 5.

Current BCLS certification with ongoing re-certification mandatory 6.

Demonstrated interpersonal, communication and patient teaching/counseling skills 7.

Demonstrated organizational and critical thinking skills 8.

Demonstrated ability to work both independently and collaboratively within the interdisciplinary health and support team 9.

Experience with primary nursing in an outpatient setting 10.

BScN an asset

Requirements

Candidates must hold a current Certificate of Registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario and have at least two years of recent adult oncology experience. Additional requirements include CON(c) certification, BCLS certification, and successful completion of a Registered Nurse Physical Assessment Course.
