About the role

The Medical Office Assistant performs registration and clerical support functions for a primary care clinic serving newcomers and refugees. They work within an inter-disciplinary team to assist with patient navigation, health assessments, and the accurate recording of medical information.

Salary Details The salary range for this position is CAD $27.84/Hr. - CAD $29.72/Hr.

Within a team based model of care and reporting to the Program Manager, the Medical Office Assistant performs registration and clerical support functions for the Primary Care Clinic which sees patients and families who require high priority care within 24 hours.

Works in support of the local Community of Care (CoC) service delivery model, primary care network, and in accordance with VCH policies and procedures.

About Care for Newcomers Clinic: The Care for Newcomers clinic provides an exciting opportunity to connect with clients of diverse cultural backgrounds and to make a meaningful impact in their health care journeys as newcomers to Canada.

The Care for Newcomer’s Clinic is serving government assisted refugee clients and their families who have newly arrived in Canada.

The clinic supports clients through post arrival health assessments to identify pre-existing, chronic or acute medical conditions and assists in connecting them to care as needed.

We have an inter-disciplinary team that includes nurses, physicians and administrative assistants working within a team-based care model.

Most of our clients require support with navigation to access healthcare services and community resources and require language assistance via interpreters/interpretation tools.

Qualifications

Education & Experience Grade 12, graduation from a Medical Office Assistant program, one (1) year of recent, related clinical medical office support experience, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience. Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Demonstrated knowledge of clinical policies, procedures and objectives. Demonstrated knowledge of community resources and agencies. Demonstrated knowledge of office procedures. Business writing skills. Knowledge of medical terminology. Demonstrated ability to perform basic medical tests and accurately record results in medical files. Demonstrated ability to respond independently and effectively to emergent situation and effectively present health information to individuals. Demonstrated ability to keyboard 5,000 keystrokes per hour. Demonstrated customer service and communication skills. Physical ability to perform the duties of the position. Demonstrated ability to work independently and within a team. Demonstrated ability to prioritize and organize workload and meet deadlines. Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain satisfactory work relationships with clients and staff. Demonstrated ability to deal tactfully and effectively with coworkers, clients and staff from other agencies. Demonstrated skill in using a variety of office equipment and computer software programs. Closing Statement The hours of work including days off and work area may be subject to change consistent with operational requirements and the provision of the Collective Agreement and applicable statutes. Successful applicants may be required to complete a Criminal Records Review Check.As per Ministry of Health policy, all health care workers working in publicly-funded health care facilities are required to report their past receipt of certain vaccines or history of certain infections. Collecting these records will allow for offering of any missing vaccines, and for appropriate actions to be taken in the event of any future exposure to a communicable disease or during outbreaks.
