St. Michael’s Health Group (SMHG) is hiring Casual Care Aide Learners (CALs) through the Christian Health Association of Alberta (CHAA) Health Care Aide Apprenticeship Program (HCCAP). This workplace-based training pathway supports learners as they develop the knowledge, skills, and confidence required to become Health Care Aides.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide compassionate, resident-centred support that promotes dignity, comfort, independence, safety, and quality of life.
  • Assist residents with activities of daily living within the Care Aide Learner scope of practice, including personal care, mobility, transfers, feeding, positioning, and routine comfort measures.
  • Work under the supervision of a nurse tutor, licensed nurse, preceptor, or designated care team member while following care plans, learning plans, policies, and supervision requirements.
  • Participate actively in the HCCAP by attending orientation, completing learning activities, practising approved skills, and applying new knowledge safely in the workplace.
  • Take on additional responsibilities as competencies are taught, demonstrated, assessed, and approved.
  • Observe residents for changes in condition, behaviour, comfort, mobility, skin integrity, intake, output, or safety concerns, and report observations promptly.
  • Communicate respectfully with residents, families, visitors, and members of the interdisciplinary care team.
  • Support residents’ social, emotional, recreational, and spiritual well-being through daily routines, activities, and meaningful interactions.
  • Maintain a clean, safe, and organized care environment while following infection prevention and control practices.
  • Document care provided, use safe work practices, and follow applicable privacy, health and safety, emergency response, and resident safety policies.

Qualifications

  • Candidate must be successfully enrolled, or possess eligibility to enroll in, the CHAA Health Care Aide Apprenticeship Program (HCCAP), for the HCA education program at the post-secondary institution (Norquest College).   • Candidates where English is a Second Language (ESL) must meet the English Language Proficiency requirement in addition to the Academic English requirement.
  • Must be a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident.
  • Genuine interest in seniors’ care and a commitment to providing compassionate, respectful, resident-centred support.
  • Ability to learn and practise care skills safely under supervision while following direction from the care team.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills with residents, families, visitors, and team members.
  • Ability to read, understand, and follow care plans, workplace policies, confidentiality requirements, and health and safety procedures.
  • Reliable, accountable, and willing to participate fully in classroom, workplace, and competency-based learning requirements.
  • Ability to perform the physical demands of the role; previous related experience is considered an asset.

All successful candidates must have prior to start date

A current and clear Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Check that has been obtained on more than 90 calendar days prior to the hire date.

A tuberculosis screening that has been completed no more than 12 months prior to the hire date.

Completion of all Hepatitis B vaccines.
