About the role

Provide respiratory therapy consultation, assessment, and treatment to CHS clients as part of an interdisciplinary team.

Identify potential clients for program admission and link with CHS members and physicians to meet admission criteria.

Plan and carry out treatment programs for each client, including assessment/treatment in the client’s home and in-hospital consultation for discharge.

Act as a resource for physicians and other CHS members and provide input regarding future CHS initiatives and directions.

Travel between multiple sites as required and arrange transportation to meet operational requirements (may require use of a personal vehicle)

Job Description

In accordance with the Vision, Purpose, and Values, and strategic direction of the Vancouver Island Health Authority (Island Health), patient and staff safety is a priority and a responsibility shared by everyone; as such, the requirement to continuously improve quality and safety is inherent in all aspects of this position. Reporting to the Manager, while maintaining close professional links with Respiratory Therapy Services, the Community Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) works as a member of an inter-disciplinary team in CHS to provide respiratory therapy consultation assessment and treatment of CHS clients. The Community RRT is responsible for identifying potential clients for program admission and linking with other CHS members and physicians to ensure that admission criteria are met. The Community RRT plans and carries out a treatment program for each client, which may include assessment and treatment in the client's own home, and in-hospital consultation for discharge. This position acts as a resource for physicians, other members of CHS and provides input regarding future initiatives and directions of CHS. Travel may be a requirement of this position. Transportation arrangements must meet the operational requirements of the Vancouver Island Health Authority in accordance with the service assignment and may require the use of a personal vehicle.

Qualifications

  • Education, Training And Experience
  • Graduate of a recognized Respiratory Therapy education program; and
  • Canadian Society of Respiratory Therapists (CSRT) certification; and
  • Certified Respiratory Educator (CRE); including completion of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) course, Asthma course, and Education for Chronic Disease Course; and
  • Current CPR level "C" or BLS HCP certificate; and
  • Minimum of 3 years' respiratory care experience within the past 5 years, in a variety of treatment settings such as hospital, emergency, and at least one year experience in community and/or outpatient care; and
  • Specific training and practice in pulmonary rehabilitation, asthma education, respiratory home care, home ventilation and sleep disorders; and
  • Knowledge of current technologies and treatments for acute and chronic respiratory conditions such as pneumonia, COPD and asthma; and
  • Experience in policy/procedural development and quality improvement initiatives; and
  • Current membership or eligible for membership in the B.C. Society of Respiratory Therapists; and
  • Valid BC driver's license. Skills And Abilities

Requirements

Graduate of a recognized Respiratory Therapy education program.

Canadian Society of Respiratory Therapists (CSRT) certification.

Certified Respiratory Educator (CRE), including completion of COPD course, Asthma course, and Education for Chronic Disease Course.

Current CPR level 'C' or BLS HCP certificate.

Minimum 3 years respiratory care experience within the past 5 years, including hospital/emergency and at least 1 year community and/or outpatient care.
