About the role

The RPN provides patient-centered care in clinic and Medical Day Care settings, including rooming patients and coordinating outpatient therapy plans. Responsibilities include performing assessments, health teaching, and supporting obstetrics and gynecology patients.

As a member of the healthcare team, the Registered Practical Nurse (RPN) provides quality patient centered care to patients within the RPN scope of practice, and in collaboration with the RN when indicated.

Within the clinic setting the RPN will be responsible for rooming patients, reviewing and documenting patient visits, and assisting with examinations and specimen collection.

Within the Medical Day Care the nurse assigned will be responsible for coordinating care for patients receiving outpatient therapy plans (IV antibiotics, blood products, iron infusions).

The nurse is responsible for providing and documenting any health teaching, follow up and patient materials provided to the patient prior to the end of the visit.

The role will also include all aspects of care for the obstetrics and gynecology patient within the RPN scope of practice.

The role encompasses patient assessment, care, support and health teaching as well as procedure room set up and equipment management.

Current Certificate of Registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario as a Registered Practical Nurse.

Current CPR Certificate.

3.

Recent (minimum 2 years) experience in a clinic setting.

4.

Current certificates or current community college studies in physical assessment, venipuncture/CVAD training, medication administration including the administration of IV medications, and blood products.

5.

Successful completion of a recognized Perinatal Certificate program, or evidence of work in progress preferred.

6.

Recent (within the past 2 years) experience in the care and support of women with gynecological concerns including colposcopy and the Ontario Cervical Cancer Screening Program.

7.

Current knowledge of the physiological, psychosocial and emotional needs of the pregnant woman and her family.

8.

Demonstrated knowledge, skill and ability in the health teaching of women and their families during pregnancy and to women with gynecologic concerns.

9.

Demonstrated knowledge of instruments and equipment used in gynecology.

10.

Demonstrated ability to function within an interdisciplinary team including nursing collaboration with RN and other members of the health care team.

11.

Demonstrated ability to function in a fast-paced environment.

12.

Demonstrated ability with computer systems.

13.

Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively (written and verbal) with patients, families, and other members of the health care team.

14.

Demonstrated leadership, critical-thinking, organizational and problem-solving skills

Requirements

Requires a current CNO registration as an RPN, CPR certification, and at least 2 years of clinic experience. Candidates should have training in physical assessment, IV administration, and experience in gynecological or perinatal care.
