Provide quality patient care for children and youth (under age 18) in the Mental Health Youth Inpatient unit.

Support assessment and short-term stabilization of urgent mental health crises.
Perform physical assessment and mental status assessment.
Administer and manage treatment in accordance with mental health disorder pharmacology knowledge.

The Inpatient unit is an 8-bed regional program supporting children and youth under the age of 18 from the Central Region who are experiencing acute mental health crisis. This program serves children and adolescents requiring admission for assessment and short-term stabilization of urgent mental health problems. In alignment with RVH core value of Working Together cross coverage within the Mental Health and Addictions Programs and across RVH is an expectation to support organizational Human Resource needs as they arise. The RN is a professional caregiver who is responsible and accountable for providing quality patient care within a delivery model in accordance with RVH Values, policies and standards of care, the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) standards of care, and all relevant legislation. As a qualified candidate you will have the following job requirements: Education:
A current Certificate of Competence issued by the College of Nurses of Ontario is required.
Certification in Psychiatric/Mental Health Nursing is preferred.
Non-violent Crisis Intervention is required.
Current CPR is required.
Physical assessment certificate an asset.
Post diploma courses in Child/Youth Mental Health Nursing an asset.
Knowledge in Brief Solution Focus Therapy an asset Experience:
Minimum of two years’ experience in an acute care inpatient child/youth mental health setting preferred.
Knowledge with the Recovery Model of Care is an asset.
Exceptional written and verbal communication, interpersonal and organizational skills.
Knowledge of the major psychiatric disorders as identified in the DSM IV.
Sound assessment skills with regard to physical assessment, mental status assessment etc.
Systems theory as it relates to family dynamics.
Knowledge of the pharmacology in the treatment of mental health disorders in children and youth.
Excellent problem-solving skills and efficient time management skills.
Ability to make decisions regarding patient care both independently and as a part of the interprofessional team.
Working knowledge of diagnostic test and tools used in the Mental Health field i.e. therapeutic drug levels, Mental Status Exams, Beck Depression tests, etc.
Working knowledge of the Mental Health Act, Health Care Consent Act and Substitute Decisions Act.
Sound documentation skills and awareness of legalities related to documentation.
Strong commitment to ongoing education and professional development.
