Perform core laboratory testing across Hematology, Chemistry, Transfusion Medicine, Limited Microbiology, and Specimen Procurement/Processing.
Receive, assess, process, and prioritize specimens while ensuring accurate patient identification, specimen integrity, and appropriate test order verification.
Operate, maintain, and calibrate laboratory analyzers and equipment; troubleshoot and communicate malfunctions and initiate remedial action.
Perform quality control, quality assurance, and proficiency testing; identify trends/issues and initiate corrective action.
Interpret, verify, and report laboratory results accurately and timely, including recognizing and communicating critical values.
Support safe transfusion practices by performing blood bank testing, issuing blood products, and following transfusion medicine procedures.
Collect blood specimens when required (including venipuncture) while maintaining patient safety, comfort, and confidentiality; procure and label specimens per protocols.
Document testing, maintenance, quality activities, incidents, and corrective actions clearly and accurately.
Collaborate with physicians, nurses, laboratory colleagues, and other healthcare professionals to support coordinated, high-quality patient care.
Support laboratory inventory management by monitoring supplies, reagents, and blood products; identify shortages and liaise with Canadian Blood Services as required.
Follow Accreditation Canada requirements, applicable legislation, professional standards, and organizational policies.
Organize time to collect, assay, and report results to meet defined turnaround times.
Act as a point of reference and resource for Medical Laboratory Assistants.
Participate in Quality Assurance activities
MLT with CSMLS Certification and registration with CMLTO (consideration for MLT students and new graduates actively pursuing CSMLS certification). Licensed to practice in Hematology, Chemistry, Transfusion Medicine, Specimen Procurement/Processing, and Limited Microbiology.
