Requirements summary

  • Current full registration with the BC College of Social Workers.

Job Description

In accordance with the Vision, Purpose, and Values, and strategic direction of the Island Health (Vancouver Island Health Authority), patient & staff safety is a priority and a responsibility shared by everyone at VIHA; as such, the requirement to continuously improve quality and safety is inherent in all aspects of this position. Reporting to the Clinical Coordinator, performs professional social work of moderate complexity. Assists patients and their families with practical problems and personal concerns and consults with hospital staff and community agencies regarding the psychosocial aspects of the patients' situation.

Qualifications

  • Education, Training And Experience Bachelor of Social Work degree (B.S.W.) from an accredited school of Social Work, however a Master's degree (M.S.W.) is preferred. Current full registration with the BC College of Social Workers. Related social work experience, preferably in a medical setting, and demonstrated clinical competence. Skills And Abilities

Link to Full Job Description https://jd.viha.ca/JD767.pdf Additional information for applicants Currently, this bachelors or masters degree of social work position is located at the Royal General Hospital on a general medical unit combined with an in-patient renal unit. Social Workers work in team-based care and are involved in complex discharge planning with clients and their families to be able to return to their home community or to alternate level of care. Social workers provide short-term supportive counselling related to grief, loss, adjustment to diagnosis or change of health status, advance care planning (financial management, health care decisions, end of life care) and support referrals and applications to a variety of government and community resources for finances, housing and equipment. Previous experience working in acute care will be an asset. All social workers are Designated Responders under the Adult Guardianship Act and must investigate, assess and intervene in all allegations of adult abuse, neglect and self-neglect. Social workers work collaboratively with the Ministry of Children and Families regarding child protection issues. Social Workers must be registered with the British Columbia College of Social Workers to practice in acute care hospitals.
