The Addiction Counsellor is responsible for assessing individual needs, developing treatment plans, and providing short-term counselling for clients with substance use and mental health issues. They must also manage cases, coordinate stabilization services, and implement immediate crisis interventions when necessary.
Candidates must possess a Chemical Dependency diploma and a valid Class 5 driver's license. Proficiency in mental health services, addiction issues, and the ability to work within a multi-disciplinary team are essential.

The Addiction Counsellor, accountable to the Manager of Mental Health and Addictions Services, will primarily be responsible for supporting individuals that present with substance use and mental health issues. They will be required to assess an individual's needs and develop a treatment plan. This may include short term counselling and/or referrals to longer term resources and they may need to case manage the coordination of stabilization services to enhance a successful referral to ongoing services. The Addiction Counsellor must be able to recognize the elements of a client in crisis and implement immediate action appropriate to the crisis. This may include assessing for risk of suicide and developing a safety plan. They need to maintain a working knowledge of MHAS internal departments and services, and community resources including the ability to collaborate with and make referrals.
