Position Overview

We are currently seeking a compassionate and experienced Companion Caregiver to support an elderly individual living with dementia in a long-term care facility.

This role is centered on companionship, emotional support, and gentle guidance, helping the client maintain their independence while ensuring safety and well-being.

Key Responsibilities

Provide companionship and emotional support while spending time with the client at their long-term care facility

Engage the client in meaningful, enjoyable activities (conversation, walks, hobbies, etc.)

Support daily routines in a respectful, non-intrusive manner

Assist with light tasks as needed (reminders, organization, etc.)

Monitor mood, behaviour, and overall well-being

Dementia Care Expectations

The ideal candidate must have hands-on experience supporting individuals with dementia and understand the following:

Ability to manage mood fluctuations and behavioural changes with patience and empathy

Comfort supporting individuals who may resist care due to a strong sense of independence

Skilled in using gentle, persuasive communication techniques rather than directive or forceful approaches

Ability to position suggestions as choices or invitations, not demands

Effective dementia care requires calm, respectful, and person-centred communication, adapting to changing moods and abilities while preserving dignity

Requirements: Proven experience working with clients living with dementia

Valid First Aid & CPR certification

Vulnerable Sector Check (completed within the last 6 months)

Up-to-date immunization records, including: Negative TB test

Diphtheria & Tetanus

MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella)

Varicella / Zoster

Hepatitis B: · WHMIS certification (Can be completed after hiring if not currently obtained)

Preferred Qualities: Strong emotional intelligence and patience

Ability to build trust with clients who value independence

Calm, adaptable, and observant approach

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
