About the role

This position supports Physiotherapists and/or Occupational Therapists by assisting designated patients with assigned rehabilitative activities, including mobility, strengthening exercises, and activities of daily living in an acute care environment. Responsibilities also involve demonstrating the use of prescribed adaptive devices, instructing classes, reporting patient progress, and maintaining equipment and work areas.

Detailed Overview

This position supports the Physiotherapist and/or Occupational Therapist by assisting designated patients with assigned rehabilitative activities in an acute care setting.

Responsibilities

  • Assists assigned patients with established rehabilitation activities such as mobility and strengthening exercises, walking programs, outpatient pool programs and activities of daily living as directed.
  • Demonstrates to patients the use of prescribed treatment/adaptive devices such as braces, wheelchairs, walkers, and modified eating utensils and personal care items.
  • Instructs general ROM classes as directed.
  • Reports observations of patients'' behaviour and progress to Therapist/Nurse.
  • Communicates concerns and/or changes to patients' condition.
  • Sets up and organizes furnishings and equipment for related activities as directed.
  • Cleans and maintains equipment and reports malfunctioning equipment to appropriate staff.
  • Maintains work area in a safe and orderly condition.
  • Maintains established inventory of equipment, devices, and materials, and assists in the ordering process following established guidelines.
  • Makes minor repairs to splint straps and other such devices using the sewing machine, and makes temporary shoe raises using the sanding machine as assigned by the Occupational Therapist.
  • Records patients' attendance and workload information statistics following established guidelines.
  • Transports patients to and from rehabilitative treatment area utilizing mechanical aids such as wheelchairs and stretchers.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications: Education and Experience

Completion of a Rehabilitation Assistant program or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Skills and Abilities

Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing. Ability to deal with others effectively. Physical ability to carry out the duties of the position. Ability to organize work. Ability to operate related equipment.
