About the role

The physician will provide medical care for inpatients on a consultant basis, performing routine physical assessments and addressing general medical concerns, while also administering IV Ketamine and monitoring patients during treatment. Responsibilities include collaborating with the interdisciplinary team, utilizing electronic medical platforms, and ensuring best practice standards are maintained.

Position Summary

An opportunity for an ER physician to work in our medical clinic at Homewood, the national leader in mental health and addictions treatment in Canada. This position is within our specialized treatment program delivering evidence-based treatments and superior clinical outcomes.

Care is delivered on-site at the Homewood Health Centre in Guelph, Ontario, in a collaborative environment with a supportive interdisciplinary team that includes nursing, social work, occupational therapy, recreational therapy, music therapy, and horticulture therapy. In this role, you will be responsible for the clinical care of patients as they engage in their recovery journey.

What you’ll be doing

  • Provide medical care for inpatients up to 3 days per week on a consultant basis (not MRP), for routine physical assessments and addressing general medical concerns. The volume of patients is approx. 1-2 per hour (5-8 per day on average)
  • Administer IV Ketamine and monitor patients for the duration of their treatment
  • No on-call or after-hours commitment is required
  • Collaborate with other physicians, nurses and allied health professionals in providing optimal patient care within an interdisciplinary team
  • Utilize the electronic medical platforms available such as Caseworks and BDM (training provided)
  • Provide clinical guidance to the program and to the admitting department for appropriate and timely referrals and admissions
  • Ensure best practice standards of clinical care are implemented and maintained
  • Support colleagues with patient coverage during physician absences
  • Complete and submit OHIP billings in a timely manner
  • Liaison with third party referrers as needed for continuity of care (VAC, provincial workers compensation boards, employers)

What we are looking for

  • Degree in Medicine and a license, in good standing, to practice medicine in Ontario
  • Registration with CFPC and CPSO
  • Experience and comfort administering Ketamine
  • Mental health or addiction medicine experience is valued but not required
  • Adept at creating an environment that supports team spirit and collaboration across the organization
  • Faculty appointment preferred – experience in working with medical students and residents
  • Inspire others to be accountable through action, decisions and/or communication
  • Strong ability to create exceptional relationships with clients, patients, customers, and colleagues
  • Strong ability to negotiate and influence with proven critical thinking, analysis and complex problem-solving skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills

  • Demonstrated commitment to infection prevention and control needs of the hospital

Additional/Optional

Integrated Chronic Pain Service - Opportunities exist to participate in our multidisciplinary Chronic Pain Clinic within the Medical Clinic.

This service emphasizes non-pharmacological, evidence-based care with a focus on Pain Reprocessing Therapy (PRT).

The clinic is non-interventional and does not provide routine procedural injections.

Physicians conduct comprehensive assessments to exclude underlying structural or medical contributors, collaborate with patients on individualized care plans, and offer PRT-informed follow-up or refer to our full-time therapist who provides ongoing therapeutic interventions.

Training and support are available for physicians interested in completing PRT certification.

Requirements

Candidates must possess a Degree in Medicine and hold a license in good standing to practice medicine in Ontario, along with registration with CFPC and CPSO. Experience and comfort administering Ketamine are required, and while mental health or addiction medicine experience is valued, strong collaboration, critical thinking, and organizational skills are essential.
