Job Description

Position Overview

  • The Physician Assistant will support emergency department physicians with assigned or delegated tasks assigned by the physician. The physician maintains primary responsibility for patient care as the principle medical decision-maker. The type of work delegated, and the extent of direct supervision provided to the PA will be dependent on the physician’s scope of practice and SHN policy.
  • Typically tasks may include:
  • Conducting patient interviews and taking medical histories
  • Performing physical examinations and procedures
  • Providing counseling on preventive health care
  • Performing controlled acts as delegated by a physician
  • Performing other tasks within the supervising physician’s scope of practice that the physician deems the PA qualified to complete.

Requirements

  • Graduate of the McMaster or Consortium Physician Assistant Program
  • Certified by the Physician Assistant Certification Council of Canada
  • Eligible to work in Canada/Ontario
  • Current ACLS and BCLS
  • Demonstrates excellent time management, prioritization, decision-making, problem-solving and organizational skills
  • Demonstrates ability to take initiative and work under pressure
  • Demonstrates excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to interact with a wide range of stakeholders with professionalism, tact and diplomacy
  • Demonstrated ability to manage confidential and sensitive materials in a professional manner
  • Demonstrates a commitment to customer service when dealing with patients, colleagues and volunteers and other members of the community and public
  • Demonstrates values consistent with SHN’s Code of Conduct and is committed to fostering a healthy and positive work environment in accordance with Health & Safety policy and legislation.
  • Demonstrates an understanding of and commitment to SHN's comprehensive safety programs and practices including staff safety, patient safety, and environmental safety and participates in regular in-service education in this area.
